This morning we went to have a look at one of our dream cars as we are toying with getting an R8 or a GT-R

You know they say never meet your hero's? Well I now understand why.

Admittedly we didn't take it out for a drive (didn't want to waste the dealers time until we have made out mind up R8/GT-R) so I'm only commenting on the cars looks and feels.

It looked stunning from the outside, properly beautiful cars that always make me stare lovingly when I see one, but the interior, wow what an abomination!

The door cards creaked more than Katie prices bed, the key was the same as an VW golf, the dash looked like it has just been removed from an ok shape Audi A4 and the seats, although comfy, we're incredibly dull.

I Walked out feeling completely underwhelmed, I was expecting hand stiched leather dash, push button start, German build quality, sporty seats etc.

Such a shame!

Realistly all it needed was a funky key, push button start in the centre console, the seats from a RS6 and some
More leather and I would have been sold.

Am I alone? Did I just see a dog or are they all the same?

you can have a hand stitched leather dash. You can have RS seats. You can have carbon fibre everywhere.

If you pay for it. They were all options.

The key is the same for all VAG cars - Lamborghini Gallardo included i think. The creaky door card is a surprise though.

I had an experience day and drove an R8 and mine had most of what you wanted apart from the start button, sounds like you've been to look at one with poverty spec.

As an actual driving machine the R8 is awesome though imo, however even specc'ed up the GT-R has a much better interior than the R8.

I'd probably be more interested in how it drives, TBH.

I can understand the issue with the seats and the dash, but would you honestly have been influenced by a nicer ignition key and a starter button?
Not a dig, just curious

Gfs dad had a 57 plate V8 for a couple of years, I was a passenger a few times but never drove it...

I felt quite diconnected from the world outside, it felt a bit like sitting in a fast audi saloon/estate...very quick but not visceral or involving.

Around town you could be driving any other car, he always said it was pretty easy to drive.

Always thought the interior was very nice, but I'm used to the jap plastic of my mx5, so maybe not the best person to judge.

Your missing the point I feel, it's not the "key" or "button" specifically but more the experience, the drama and the feeling of a car!

My 370z GT feels more "sporty" and "special" than the R8

.....

Did you even start it to hear it with the exhaust flaps open on the warm up cycle?

Seriously, one of your criteria for judging a car is whether it has a push button start or not rolleyes I mean really????

Dynamically the R8 is one of the best handling cars that has come out in the last five years. I personally feel it is quicker in a real world environment than a Gallardo and that comes from someone who has driven both many miles on both track and road.

Find an R8 with a well specked interior and if you can one with the optional sports seats, but these are rare as they were a very expensive option. A well specked car is a very nice place to be in and makes a Gallardo seem even older than it is

Here are a couple of examples for you, sorry I don't have any pics of the sports seats:

1 car and you feel light that, the r8 is a monster of a car but it will always be a personnel thing. I can't see how using your criteria you would choose a gtr over it thou..

The r8 I tracked around silverstone had a fantastic interior and cockpit experience. The key is not important to me nor is a starter button-it's the package that matters.

The gtr is an awesome car though; I'd be very happy with either tbh.

(a 370z is not even in the same league)

If it looked like either of the above pictures I would have been very happy!

It seems like it just saw a basic spec one, at least I know what to look for when looking around now.

I'll report back when I have seen another higher spec one!

If its sense of occasion you want when sitting in it, forget a volume built Audi, get a TVR Tuscan or a Cerbera smile

When I sat in R8's when they were launched, I was a bit disappointed that the interior felt and looked pretty much the same as my A6.

You based your judgement on the interior and looks. Drive it, if it's the V8 and you are used to driving a fast car you will feel underwhelmed. If you drive the V10 version then you will leave with a big smile on your face. I would not own a V8 R8 as I'm much happier in an M5 or M6.

I know! The gtr interior isn't anything special at all, which is why I was so supprised that the R8 interior wasn't as nice with worse build quality!

And yes it would be an V8, I know the V10 is leagues ahead but budget won't stretch that far im afraid
