Newbie seeks advice :) BBK S4 4.2 v8 Engine Required
Discussion
Hello All,
Long time lurker yadda yadda..
I was wondering if anyone knows of anywhere that might have an S4 4.2 v8 (Engine code BBK) ?
I have managed to acquire a nice 2004 S4 where the engine has dropped a valve. It's too good to break, but the engine isn't in a very good way. Will post some gory pics soon, but basically it's dropped a valve and made a mess of one of the banks and the cylinder
Silly me thought '4.2 v8 engine, must be easy to get hold of' but no.. it would seem not.. So if anyone could point me in the right direction that would be great. I believe a rebore and new head would be prohibitively expensive due to the coating on the block and cost of a head on it's own..
I am very lucky to have use of a ramp out of hours and some master techs to pick brains off and to steer me in the right direction and quite fancied a little project..
Anyways hello all, looking forward to joining the banter..
I also drive a 190k 2.5 tdi allroad which (touch wood) has been a great workhorse..
cheers all

Dropped valve? Ouch, crap luck there. Never seen that before.
Used, good S4 engines are pretty desirable as it can be cheaper to fit a secondhand engine than repair one with rattly chains. I'm sure you've already got your head down but usual breakers, dismantlers and ebay. All the larger Audi forums almost certainly worth a look too just in case a damaged car appears for breaking.
Good luck!

I thought you might fancy some pictures
So...

This on it's own apparently isn't too much of an issue as the head can be fixed (from my little knowledge it looked foobar'd to me) However both heads had damage with 12 bent valves in total.
What made it uneconomical to repair was the fact that there was bore damage. Alas he drove it around like this for a while and now you can see the little end bearing on one of the cylinders.

The reason for the valve damage was a broken cam chain tensioner and guide (if you look at the pic you can see the slack chain in the bottom LHS)

(makes an IL4 engine seem quite simple!)
The barrels are a single piece so the engine would need to be stripped down and because they have a special coating (not nikasil, but something else -i forget) means that the amount of engineering work to get the engine sorted just isn't worth it ie it'll need
valves
piston
maybe a conrod
full gasket set
both heads reconditioned etc..
full camchains + tensioners

So next stage is to source an engine, going to put new camchain and tensioners on it whilst the engine is out, then put it back together again.. simples
ops:
I forgot to take more pictures along the way, but going to set up the gopro and do a time lapse for the engine back in job... now to find an engine :|

This place was recommended on an Audi forum as a reputable supplier from Germany. UK based buyer who works for Racelogic bought his engine from here to sort his S4 shortly after purchase
http://www.ebay.de/itm/Audi-S4-B7-8E-4-2-344-PS-V8...
That engine claims to be less than 58k miles old so fingers crossed....

Worth a punt if you know someone who speaks German, or try a message in English and they'll probably understand you fine. They may have engines with more miles on them as well - that was the only one that came up based on finding their online shop and putting the engine code in a title search
Might be worth ringing Grizz at http://www.unit20.org/ or Doug at http://www.mrctuning.com/ both Audi S / RS specialist who occasionally break cars
funnily enough yes..
nice engine has arrived from das germanland and i've booked friday off to go down and replace the timing chains, tensioners and some oil seals on it before mating it back with the gearbox.. then plan is saturday to start to get it back into the car
Will post pics along the way..
