Help! I cant get in..............

.........Sort of. The passenger door on my Mk5 Golf wont unlock on the remote fob or on the switch on the drivers door. It will only open when I pull the handle from the inside. My garage has told me that it needs a new motor and that parts and labour will come to around £200. He also told me that if left, the lock could fail completely leaving no way of opening the door other than to cut into the door to remove the lock, resulting in a hefty body shop bill on top of the new lock etc...
Has anyone come across this before and does £200 sound fair? also, is it possible for me to fix myself if I source a new motor from a breakers yard? Please bear in mind that my mechanical know-how is lets say...limited!

Is it the central locking or the catch?
TBH for £200 I would probably pay it on a newish car like that. I hate working inside doors, always full of sticky black stuff that gets everywhere and you always end up with sliced hands. Mind you, you can guarantee that the dealer will not bother to put back the waterproof membrane or make good properly

Bookmarked cos i'm having exactly the same problem. Hoping its just a sticking something or other! Little tip. If you look at the door where the catch is there should be a black rubber bung with a lock pictured on it. Pop it out to reveal the catch which you can operate by popping the ignition key in and moving it up or down...

Go to a scrap yard, remove the motor from a car like yours. Having learned how to do it on a car you don't care you can then fix your own car with a pretty good idea of how it'll go.Scrap yards aren't just for parts, they are for practice.

Exs dads mk5 golf TDi had this issue with one of the rear doors. Started as only being able to open it from inside, eventually it didn't open at all.

Just had this myself with the rear passenger door on my MK5 Golf, it wouldn't open at all. It was intermittent at first then gave up completly which left me with the door stuck in the closed position with the deadlocks on. It is the deadlock mechanism that seizes up and you should hear it click twice rather than the usual once on the door that is jammed shut while unlocking the car.
My local VW got the door open by working both the inner & outer door handles at the same time while locking/unlocking via the keyfob. Mine was very stubborn and they had the car in for 2 days in total and even resorted to spraying some lube down the inside of the door and letting it soak overnight, eventually it opened but if that hadn't worked they were sending me to the bodyshop to get it cut open!!!! All I can say is thank god it opened!
Luckily in the end I was only charged £190 by my local VW stealer to sort which was £100 for the new locking module and an hours labour to get the door open to enable them to replace the part, which involves unbolting the outer door skin to gain access to the locking module. I declined the statutory £90 robbing for a diagnostic as I knew what was wrong thanks to my Vag Com :-)
From my experience and a lot of others that I have read about I would suggest getting this fixed asap as it is easy to sort when the door opens but is a complete pain if the door won't open and if it is intermittent and you have access to Vag Com then you can disable the deadlocks as a temporary solution until it is fixed (I wish I had known this previously with mine!)

Had similar problem on my skids. Once jammed I had to pull the door card off and bugger about with the locking mechanism whilst the door was shut, big pain in the ass but it can be done without cutting into the door, took me almost a day to do (once the lock was released it was easy to replace everything)
