.56 6th gear conversion for B6 S4 - Where?!
Discussion
In the states this seems a popular conversion:
Fits all 0A3 transmissions in the B6-B7 S4.
This upgraded 6th gear is for customers with V8 S4s looking for better fuel economy and/or a higher top speed in 6th gear. The stock 6th gear in your transmission is .78. At 60 mph this yields about 2400 rpm. At 70 mph it yields about 2800 rpm. At 80 mph it yields about 3200 rpm.
With a .56 6th gear, 60 mph would yield 1700 rpm, 70 mph would drop to 2010 rpm, and 80 mph would drop to 2300 rpm!
Where can I have it done in the Uk and how much does it cost...?

Depends if the gear is specially machined and comes from the USA or if its a stock Audi part from another box that's easy enough to order?
On an s4 I imagine it'll be an engine and box out job to get to the gear so labour will be biggest cost. May be that a specialist will pull the engine and take your box to another specialist to swap the gear. Nothing inherently difficult about it but experience goes a long way

They're OEM gears - USA website states:
These gears are high quality OEM gears direct from Germany, not available in the states. Many other ratios available for the other gears as well. (Allow 2 to 3 weeks for delivery on the gears, depending on current availability.)
It's not just the economy issue - it's also that motorways are painful in the S4 as it's so under geared

This is actually quite a common conversion in the VAG world, I've done a five speed one on an Audi A2 Tdi, I assume the six speed boxes are similar? It's all done from outside the car, take a wheel off end cap of box off & the cogs are there. Though the transaxle cars may be different
Have you got a part number for the replacement gear? Can tell you if it's available and if so at what cost.
I'd suggest worth calling MRC or similar local to you to see if they can tell you what's involved - I can't see being able to change it in situ with quattro, but happy to be proved wrong lol

Box out doesn't need engine out on an S4 V8
Part numbers are listed here:

...but I've no idea if they're correct

If the part numbers in the thread linked in Dr G's post are correct then the first one is £324 and the 2nd is £202
By the looks of it you could find both gears you need in gearbox codes FRG, FRF or GAZ. One of the gears can be found in 3 other gearbox codes but if you were going down that route it'd be much easier/better to source used gears from the same box.
They appear to be specific to the 2.5 tdi 2 wheel drive only, but would also appear to be used in Passat and Superb models - without delving really deeply into it I'd say A4 is the easiest option from Audi, but some A6s may have the parts you need too. Rough dates they were available are late 2000 to 2008, so nothing earlier will be any good.

I contacted MRC about this, and the response was that they'd never done it on a B6.
It's gearbox out, but not engine.
I also find mine hard work on the motorway, and would be interested in doing the swap. Let me know who you use, and how much they quote please!
I'm using Ellis and Dunn Gearbox solutions - recommended by my local Audi place - they're in Westbury, Wilts. They haven't let me know how much yet... Am thinking £1000 ish but I may be way underIt's gearbox out, but not engine.

I've never thought that, but a higher 6th would be good for economy. And as it will do 153mph in 5th, it wouldn't effect performance. I bought my car new in 2004, it would have been worth having it done then, but we don't do enough miles now to justify it.Gassing Station | Audi, Seat, Skoda & VW | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
