I was out and about in my 2011 (new model) Passat TDi 170bhp yesterday and noticed that the accelerator pedal was rather spongey. I pulled over and lo-and-behold the footmat had shifted and was fouling the pedal. I relocated the mat and pushed the pedal to check, which went reassuringly all the way down to its stop. However, the engine refused to rev over 2500rpm even with the pedal fully depressed, but there was no fault code displayed. Is this normal?

I then pulled back out onto the open road and gunned it and it happily whizzed round to the red-line and behaved itself without problem for the rest of the day.

Is there something in the ECU which intentionally stops the engine revving over 2500rpm if the car is stationary and in neutral, or is something wrong with my car?

I think that's normal.

Had this on plenty of the newer VAG stuff but no problems, seems normal.

Sounds a good idea on a diesel.

They cut the throttle if you put your foot on the brake also. Modern technology, it's great!

I'd guess they stick it on a rolling road?

I don't think they need to rev it higher than 2,5k RPM. It's supposed to be a 'fast idle test', isn't it?

Fair point. Can they do that with the haldex equipped models?

Good question, probably not.

So it seems that all is well with the car. Thanks for the responses.

I guess we should be happy that VW is taking the lead in the fight against anti-social behaviour in the years to come. This will help prevent Gary from trying to impress his mates by revving the b*ll*cks off his VW TDi, whilst parked up at his local Drive-Thru' of choice!

AFAIK you can. Why wouldn't you be able to put a haldex model on a rolling road?

And a pain in the arse trying to left-foot brake.
