Hi guys,

New here, looking for some advice.

Has anyone had an ownership experience with a 4.2 V8 Audi RS6?

I was looking at buying one....until I read an article from Warranty Direct claiming the RS6 was the most unreliable car they have ever had!

Cheers,

Search on here. They have a reputation for cost a absolute bomb to own. Suspension and loads of other issues last time I looked. I'd keep a massive "when/if" fund at hand. Actually I'd just steer clear, as I find spending thousands on repairs rather dull!

The most unreliable car we have ever had - and one of the least pleasant. We/Warranty Direct paid out well over £20k in 27 months. In the end, it wasn't the money, it was the amount of time it was off the road

Raped my wallet. Unreliable (suspension, oil leaks and even petty stuff such as boot lock, washer jets etc)

Even consumables such as tyres, discs/pads and fuel etc. meant it was very costly to run. My 911 Turbo is cheaper to keep!

I only had a W8 and even that cost many, many thousands in faults and repairs in six months (40k miles car). I can barely bring myself to mentally add it up and type it. Large complex VAG machines can be a nightmare. Never again. Which is why I currently stick to basic Golfs in drag (S3) for a daily - cheap as chips!

Reliability?

I had one. Think early XJ40. Now multiply that except for costs, those must be multiplied exponentially.

Transmissions are crap and you'd think they were made out of dinosaur fur they're so damned expensive.

You will only hear the bad stories.

I have run one for a few years and apart from running costs, never any issues.

14k's worth of warranty work for mine in four months, it's the shortest I've ever owned a car.

Luckily Audi took it back and gave us a refund.

With the costs real owners have posted up here you may as well buy a Porsche Turbo or pretty much any other top end exotic. At least you'll get more thrills for the money. Or maybe just go for a slower, smaller, massively cheaper car to run as I did. Knowing your limits is a good thing I have discovered!

Consider something cheaper, like cocaine - and a trip to vegas.

I had one. Cost me 5.5k in the 12 months that I had it. Not cheap cars to run, but lovely to drive.

Of course, but that's the same for every car. There's always examples of good ones etc. but in this case, I read that the RS6's reputation (for running costs) is well deserved.

Put it this way, how many RS6s out there have had the same gearbox/suspension from new and has never had a problem with either in, say, a representative life of 100,000 miles?

Don't get me wrong, I'd love one but considered the running costs (naively thinking it'd cost a little more than a normal A6 biggrin) and the costs would well exceed my expectation and wallet.

You can minimise potential costs though, i.e. get one with replacement non-DRC suspension, gearbox rebuild (although I understand you'll need to do the same again some point in the future), recent pads/discs etc.

This would help for sure.

I don't think Warranty Direct like them much, it even has its own special section! http://www.reliabilityindex.com/reliability/search...

I kept a tuned 04 RS6 for over 3 years. Had the suspension changed before I bought it. Brilliant car, amazing torque, all-weather ability and comfort. If you buy one make sure of a warranty and recent service, brakes, tyres etc. With two turbochargers you get all the stuff that goes with them and hence twice as many things to go wrong. I'd carry 3/4K as a backup, not including the warranty.

Cheers guys,

I've had pretty much the same response from other forums.
As much as I like the RS6, I think I'll be giving it a miss. Its not a motor I would consider driving on weekends only like say a TVR Cerbera for example so I now can't quite see the point of it.

Thanks again,

Wow. Not seen consensus on PH like that before.
