A4 speedometer fault

i have a 1998 audi A4 with a speedometer fault it does not register speed or miles. I have had a diagnostic tool pluged into the car and the speedometer works during simulation of the guages. Is there a sensor on the gearbox to give a signal to the speedo, or is there a knowen common fault?

Its probably the cable thats snapped - at least thats what happened on my old Vauxhall Carlton. Any garage should be able to do it in 20 minutes.
