What's this and do I need it

Just finished an engine oil change , installed engine under tray and reversed back to find the rubber bung on the ground. Obvious that it's fallen from my car but from where? Anybody help? Currently not dripping any fluids so may not be essential ? Cars a 2000 Polo GTI .

Come on Dr G or tame technician ...what's your thoughts please ..could it be from gear selection rod?just looking with the bonnet open I can't see anything obviously missing . Regards. Ian

Closest thing anyone here can think of is one of the grommets under engine cover.

One other suggestion was cover on the end of certain serpentine belt tensioners.

Presumably no part number on it?

Hi Dr G and colleagues. ...I removed engine cover but nothing amiss . I attach pic showing other side of "bung" it has slight countersink but due to damage can't be sure if it's meant. Thanks for your thoughts ,it's much appreciated. Car running fine with no leaks so not urgent...my only concern is if iits some kind of wiper for gear linkage rods but to check that the lower cover has to be removed again...so will try to look at screenshots in my local VW garage next week. Thanks again. Ian
