I've been running a blue motion 1.6 tdi and considering when changing to a used MK 7 which is the better diesel or petrol .
I read different reviews of later petrol engines being more frugal and diesel being second choice .
Any opinions or experiences to share ?

Depends entirely on how you use your car. If it's lots of small journeys around town then buy a petrol, or if you're pounding the motorway doing big miles buy a diesel.

See my thread on my 1.4ACT. I'd beg to differ to previous comment, I do 20-25k per annum, the petrols smooth & long gearing makes it relaxing on motorways. 11.5k miles & 42.9 mpg based on a spreadsheet. Company car tax is lower too.

You'd get a lot better fuel economy with a diesel though

Well for comparison my MK7 GTD did a 140 mile journey on Tuesday at an indicated 61.1mpg. That was a few 50mph stretches but mostly sat at 75mph on the ACC. I imagine the 1.6TDI or the lower powered 2.0TDI could achieve better than that.

Oh, and road tax on a manual GTD is £20 a year.

For the ultimate refinement choose the 1.4 petrol, the 1.6TDI will still offer better economy.

What is your annual mileage?

The 1.4 TSI ACT is the nicest petrol engine. Very smooth and responsive with strong performance and good economy. However it isn't quite as economical as the diesels which for high mileage users make more financial sense. 1.6 TDI is adequate but the 2.0 TDI a better all rounder.

I must admit, that was four-up with a boot crammed with luggage, correct tyre pressures etc. Ambient air temperature effects the 2.0TDI hugely as you probably know. How many miles does your car have on it?

I would say petrol simply because it'll get to temperature quicker and is probably a little "cleaner" on short journeys - financially I don't think it'll make too much difference.

FWIW I have a 2.0 TDI Mk7 and whilst it's new so the engine is still bedding in, I seem to be seeing around 53mpg on mixed but mostly out of town driving - let's say you see 40mpg average on a petrol - that's 20% or so so maybe a couple of hundred quid a year difference vs. what you're paying in depreciation and other stuff.

Enjoy the refinement of a petrol for that mileage.

The 1.4TSI petrol motor is a gem, very refined, punchy and frugal, the sweet spot of a great car.

I drove the GTD last night to the parents and spent 2.5 hrs with the cruise set at 0.85 then 0.9 and still averaged 47mpg. I was quite impressed with that. It's really not a bad thing to drive when you want a hoon either.

I agree with the above poster about the 1.4TSI, that's a lovely engine too.

Can't deny you'd get better with the disiesals, even taking into consideration the cheaper fuel cost. But for me comparing the 1.4 & 2.0TDI back to back there was simply no comparison. But I can understand that costs come into it, at least 15k of mine is company mileage & BIK is lower.

One other & obvious consideration is that you spend more time in the petrol station, again it's a personal decision if this bothers you.
