Due to a change of job I am covering more miles than I ever expected, many on roads I don't know. As I don't know the roads I seem to go into every pothole that I pass and due to my wheel size it feels like I am going to crack an alloy or get a blow out etc. My plan is to change from the current 19 inch wheels to a 17inch wheel. The trouble is I have no idea what to look for. The current tyre size is 255/35/19, can I buy any Audi 17 inch wheels from eBay and they would fit or am I missing something? I have read that the 17 inch wheels may not fit over my brakes so am concerned about a way forwards .

Unless its an S4 any 17's from the latest shape A4 will fit. You need to be carefull though as the ones from the older model (B7) have a smaller centre bore so physically wont fit on the new model hubs. Youll need 225/50 17 tyres.

You need wheels which are 5x112 PCD & 66.6mm centre bore. Search on Ebay for A4 B8 alloys

I have same car and wheels and run 17s in the winter - they fit fine.

Do you find the ride any softer with the 17's on?

A bit softer, more wallowy (if that's a word) in corners if making progress. The 19s are very robust though and take a lot of potholes and bad roads (annual trip to Italy on poor roads and dirt tracks and no trouble), obviously cheaper tyres if on 17's....

Just make sure you maintain the same rolling radius.
