Now that my car is out of warranty I'm looking at doing a few things with it.

The MK6 Golf engine is capable of so much more and I'm looking at having it re-mapped, a VW Racing cold air intake and maybe a Milltek Cat Back exhaust and some VW racing springs. I am 45 minutes away from AMD in Essex and 45 minutes away from a Revo dealer. I bought the car cash in April 2014, so there is no lease/finance implications etc.

Has anyone any experiences of either Revo or AMD or any other re-mapping company for that matter? Is the VW Racing cold air intake worth the money? Is it worth getting a Milltek exhaust either resonated or non-resonated?

To add I have no intentions of taking it any further i.e. stage 2 which would involve a full turbo back system as the extra cost far out weighs the minimal gain over stage 1.

Your thoughts and experiences would be appreiated.

Thanks,

Andy.

I would canvas opinions from other MK6 owners before sinking the best part of £500 into the VWR intake. On the MK5, it fouls a water outlet and snaps it off! See if that's an issue on the MK6 as well. For me it represents poor VFM in comparison to a remap and isn't really needed until you push for stage 2 and higher, i.e. every last scrap of hp it can muster.

Personally I would just delete the pre-cat (by smashing the ceramic core out with a chisel and hammer) and remap it and see what you get. The pre-cat isn't needed for UK MOTs (the exhaust system has 2 cats) and it just causes a massive bottleneck in the system. Removing it improves turbo response and reduces EGTs (Exhaust Gas Temperature). The latter is important because the ECU cuts the power if they get too hot, which is quite common on remapped standard cars.

Anything else after that as part of 'stage 1' will yield comparatively smaller gains. However, if you do want a Milltek, I'd go with a resonated one personally, otherwise the drone can become tiring on long journeys.

AMD and Revo are both established brands, but Revo software is difficult to remove once it's in your ECU, which can be a pain if you want a custom map further down the line. Give R-Tech a look as they have a fantastic reputation in TFSI / TSI circles.

SVR6,

The VW Racing induction kit is £300 from Awesome GTi. I only know one owner who used this induction kit and he had no problems with it at all. I'm not sure I want to start smashing the inners of the pre cat so I'll seek advice on that.
If I did fit a Milltek it would be a resonated cat back system as I do not want the drone at motorway speeds.

Have you had direct experience of running a MK6 GTi which has been re-mapped and played with so to speak?

Any other personal experiences would be great as I can't seem to find much on PH and there doesn't seem to be much on other GTi forums.

Thanks.

That's good then, cheaper than the MK5 version!

Well it comes down to cost really. Removing the pre-cat the brutal way is just a couple of hours labour. The Milltek system is a lot of money! Sure, it has a bigger bore downpipe which will free off a few more ponies, but shifting the pre-cat is where the biggest gain comes from, and you retain the refinement and quality of the original system. Milltek quality is nowhere near up to OEM standards.

Not the MK6, just MK5s, which are not too dissimilar.

I really want to do the precat on my MK5, is it pretty DIYable? I'm really more concerned about damaging anything I shouldn't, not the getting stuck in part. Just seems a good mod for £0

No experience of the 2.0 tfsi engines but had plenty of 1.8 20vt engines mapped. AMD was by far my favourite. Smooth and constant power to the redline where as Revo was very harsh, peaky and ran out of puff at the top end.

This was a few years back though so don't take my word for it!

It is, but can be a lot of faff on axle stands to be honest, and if you run into difficulty removing the turbo to downpipe flange nuts, you could be in for a bad day. Best to arm yourself with new ones and a new gasket before hand.
