1.6tdi vs 2.0tdi

Growing family means I need to look at more practical cars. Have tried a touran and it seems to fit the bill perfectly from a practicality aspect.
I'm looking at 2011/2012 cars and hoping to spend around £10,000.
I've read mixed reviews about the 1.6tdi which seems to be plentiful on the used market. The 2.0tdi seems to be the one to go for but there just isn't the availability like there is for the 1.6.
So, is the 1.6 really that bad? I'm not after speed or total refinement. Just want something reliable really.

Earlier in the year I picked up a 3.5 year Passat S 2.0 Tdi DSG. 34k miles, a das welt car from VW Derby with a full year warranty.
A bargain.
I think a Passat is certainly big enough for 2 kids. I'm 6ft,2 and with my seat in position my dad can sit behind me more than comfortably. And the main thing, I am comfy too. You sit low in the car, whereas in a golf I feel like I'm sitting on it.
The boot is HUGE.
I was weighing up the two engines. Drove a Golf with the 1.6 and it was gutless. In a bigger car I can only imagine it's worse.
I don't wish for any more power than the 2.0. It will pull and overtake at motorway speed with ease. The 1.6 simply won't.
Last month I drove my Inlaws from derby to heathrow 4 up with huge bags. At legal motorway speeds the MFA showed 77mpg average at some points. I normally average over 60mpg day to day.
My work colleague recently purchased a new 320d, and I genuinely can't see where the extra 22k is spent. Mine was in such good condition and being a das welt car just had a fair chunk of money spent on it including all new disks and pads, and they even did a half price DSG service and cruise retrofit.

I took a Touran down to Wales a couple of months ago, 4 lads, 4 mountain bikes and kit and clothes for 3 days, everything in the car and for me it performed better than my Golf 1.6TDI, same engine and power.
Of course the man side of me says 2.0 is better but I was quite impressed with the 1.6TDI in the Touran.

I'm really not fussed by the power aspect at all. I'll rarely drive the car myself, maybe once every few months. My daily drive is a 3.2l Mercedes CDI with 265bhp and 418 lb/ft torque. It pulls well but I never need all that power!
The touran will mostly be used for short trips around town and once a week for a 60 mile round trip.
When we go on longer trips we'd take the Merc anyway.
It really just comes down to reliability for us.
There are lots of nicely specced SE 1.6 cars with pano roof etc. The 2.0 seems very scarce and the few I can find have high mileage or high price tags!
I'm kicking myself about a 2.0 sport that went for 9950 just 40 miles from me, seller told me I was 2 hours too late!
