Golf GTI or Leon Cupra 280
Discussion
I thought I was all set on ordering a new GTI but I called in to a Seat dealer today and had a look at the Leon Cupra 280 and I'm a bit torn now.
The Cupra is effectively the same and offers the same diff, dcc, dsg, more power and is cheaper. However the golf feels higher quality offers a few things extra like keyless which I would like but is more expensive.
Anyone else had the same dilemma?

The Leon interior still comes in for some stick, but it's certainly not terrible, the Mk2 Leon that was terrible. The Mk3 is a bit plain, but very function and some decent plastics higher on the dash, it's no VW or Audi, but I don't miss my Audi interior.
If you're happy with the interior of the Leon then go for it, great reviews, but then I'm sure the Golf is excellent as well. Just make sure you get a healthy discount off the Leon to make it an even better deal.

If it were my money I'd take the Leon. The interior is a huge step up from the Mk2 (though the Golf's is doubtlessly a bit better), it's got a fair bit more grunt, I personally think it looks better, especially in 5-door form and it's a bit more unusual. I've not compared GTI to Cupra, but in equivalent 1.4 TSI form the Leon is more fun too; I imagine the same translates over to the Cupras.
Huge discounts to be had on the Leon too, largely because people in the same position as you are plumping for the Golf due to the higher perceived "quality".

GTI as it will be the nicer car to live with day to day, whereas you'll probably only appreciate the extra power of the Leon occasionally. Things like the higher quality interior, ACC and auto hand brake sway the Golf for me. Its just the perfect all round car without compramise.

I don't know if you'd noticed, but VW have recently added the winter pack, discover nav and keyless to the standard GTI spec.
Has that definitely gone ahead now then? As it was rumored last month and briefly appeared on the configurator then got pulled. va1o said:

Yep, was confirmed last week in a memo to dealers. All cars with a build week of 22 onwards will be upgraded.andrewparker said:

I've been doing some research and Seat dealers don't seem to do very well in the review's.
I've also got some prices back through Carwow and for the spec I would like the Seat is coming out at around £3k less than the Golf. But the Golf has things like keyless, blind spot and the 8" screen on it that isn't possible on the Leon.
The Leon is a good looking thing though plus it's quite discreet, everyone knows what a golf GTI is but a Leon can go under the radar, particularly with my boss who will probably think he's paying me too much if he sees a GTI in the car park.
I'm not too fussed about the extra power that the Leon offers, it would be nice but the 230 from the GTI will be fine. I'm currently in a pug 208 with 80bhp.
I'm still swaying towards the GTI but I haven't ruled out the Leon yet.

The Leon interior is very similar to the Golf GTIs - you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference. I have driven both over significant number of miles. The CUPRA is much much quicker than the GTI, perhaps not as defined though. I prefer manual to DSG. I have got 40mpg on a run in the CUPRA. It is a comfortable car as well. My CUPRA goes back on Monday - 9 weeks old and 8500 miles.
NB. - I work for VWG, hence have driven both.

Hard pressed to tell the difference? Well they look massively different in the photos I've seen.I test drove the cupra and the golf r and thought the interiors were a mile apart. All depends what you're used to I guess though. The seat is far better than previous Leon's I've sat in, but still way off the golf. This in turn is way off anything from Audi still.
All depends what you're coming from I guess. If you only sat in the seat you'd be very happy. Until you sat in a golf, etc etc

I called into a VW dealer this morning on my way past and i got to sit in a GTI and I can see where the extra money is going. It's not like the Seat is poor quality but the Golf is just a bit better in almost every way. I'm currently driving a Pug 208 so I can live with a cheaper interior but I do prefer the golf.
I also liked that there is less of a lip on the boot in the golf which will make it easier for our labrador to get in and out.
The reviews of almost all Seat dealers are terrible from what I've seen so far which also puts me off the Leon.
I've also called into an audi dealership and I said what I'm considering so I thought I would look at the A3 equivalent. The sales man tried to convince me that the 1.8 engine they do is the same as the 2.0 Leon and Golf engine and is just as powerful despite what the brochure says :scratch chin: When I pushed him a bit more he did confess that it's not the same at all but if I really want a 2.0 engine I would need an S3. Audi is definitely out for me.
Some number crunching to go on now but my preference is the Golf for now. I'm a couple of months away from ordering so I will be having a good think about what to do before I go for anything. I'm also holding off test driving anything until I'm in the position to sign up to a deal.
