VW Scirocco 2.0 TDi 184 poor MPG
Discussion
Hi All,
I have recently bought my first VW, and I went for the new face lifted Scirocco R-Line 2.0 TDI 184.
I bought this car for a few different reasons, but one of the main ones was its claimed mpg of 64.8 mpg (combined).
I know from experience that cars never achieve the official figures, but I thought it might get somewhere close.
In reality the current figure I am achieving is around 45-46 mpg at best!
The car has covered 2300 miles and I have been told the mpg will improve, but I am interested in knowing by how much??
Has anyone else experienced these figures from this same engine, and can you tell me if it does get any better?
I sold my pride and joy (BMW e92 330D m sport) to buy the Scirocco thinking it would be better on fuel, but in reality I could achieve the same mpg in my Beemer, so I feel as though I am wasting a lot of money!
Any feedback will be greatly appreciated,
Cheers,
Alex.

Thanks for your replies.
I think it is a disgrace that VW can advertise such figures when they are so unreachable!
Next option is a tuning box I think, will see how much difference that makes...
Not really - VW are able to publish these mpg figures by achieving them in very strict conditions i.e. sat at 50mph on a flat road at perfect ambient temperate.I think it is a disgrace that VW can advertise such figures when they are so unreachable!

You can't expect to go about your normal day on, what I assume are, a mixture of roads and achieve that figure. Circa 50mpg is still impressive and means the car costs very little to fuel on a per mile basis.
A tuning box will offer very little in way of return. You may get a slight mpg increase at low revs as a result of the torque increase meaning the car doesn't have to rev as high to drive as it would have pre-box however as soon as the turbo starts spooling, given you'll be running a higher boost level as a result of the box, you'll use more fuel as the fuel rate has to increase with the turbo spool - otherwise the claimed power gains are impossible.

I have a Golf R (Manual) and i'm getting 40.3MPG on the motorway (best)... I had the 1.6 Bluemotion with 12k miles on as a courtesy car when my Golf R went in for it's 1000 mile check and that only averaged 54MPG at best...I have recently bought my first VW, and I went for the new face lifted Scirocco R-Line 2.0 TDI 184.

You actually thought you would get anywhere near their claimed MPG figures? It's a brand new engine so it will still be tight. Even when it loosens up with a few more miles on it's just not realistic. You're just chasing numbers and wasting your time. Just get on with it.
If you read my original post properly I never said that I thought it would achieve the official figures, but I thought it might get somewhere close like I did in my BMW...I am just getting on with it, but also wondered if other people experienced the same thing.

if real mpg is 55mpg you are 'wasting' around 250 pounds a year(based on 12k ), not a lot and gap will close.the problem you have is justifying costs which is difficult when it seems a lot of money but in context is fall over the year.
Audi had. To pull some add recently due to wildly optimistic MPG claims , around 30% down on the claims , instead of the norm 10 -15 % that most other manufacturers fail by.
My supposedly miserly A4 Tecknic which for tax is supposed to be capable of 64, falling of beachy head with a strong tail wind i think , currently life time average on the dash is 45.9 and getting worse not better at 39000 miles , best seen was 46.8 .
These figures are achieved not out on a road but on a rolling road , with all non used systems disabled and a hand built car , so no wind resistant and a carefully programmed duty cycle to achieve maximum mpg with little or no reference to the real world including wind resistance , god the European Parliament is so easily mugged. Or is it us who are getting mugged !

Think about it to get economy claimed figure you have to drive like you are on your driving test... simple as that.
Hesitate less, keep momentum going, avoid braking and use engine braking avoid stopping, dont drive too close to car in front, avoid traffic light GPs, do 60mph on motorway and maintain lane discipline, rather than overtaking etc.
Avoid accelerating heavily up a hill to gain speed, gain the speed on the way down (lol).
Turn ancillaries off:-
Stereo, Bluetooth
Climate/Air con and the fan OFF
Heated mirrors
Heated seats
Auto Lights
Auto wipers
Daylight running lights
Ambient lights
But above all, under inflated tyres will cost you, as the rolling resistence is increase, over inflated tyres will leave traction being a problem, finding a good middle road based on manufacturers figures is important and makes a big diff.
Avoid filling tank, put less in. half tanks.
Avoid carrying unneccessary loads in boot. (pushchairs, childseats, allsorts, handbags, wet towels lol)
Then you will get the manufacturers figures
Each time you press the brake, its costs you money... but then if you wanted to drive like that you wouldnt have got a 184 GT scirocco... ??

I understand all of this mate, I was just expressing the fact I was a little disappointed in the mpg figures because they were so far away from the manufacturers. My BMW 330D achieved 44mpg average and official figures suggest 49.6mpg....that is pretty close and I drove it how I wanted.Hesitate less, keep momentum going, avoid braking and use engine braking avoid stopping, dont drive too close to car in front, avoid traffic light GPs, do 60mph on motorway and maintain lane discipline, rather than overtaking etc.

The reason I bought the scirocco r line 184 is because I thought I would get the best of both worlds, economy for commuting and then performance when I wanted a little play

My commuting figures have started to rise slightly and I am now achieving near 50mpg, if it goes up to mid 50's I will be happy
