SO, I had some trouble with my locking wheel nuts recently and only just managed to get my winter wheels off last weekend.

Once I'd got the summer back on, I didn't have a chance to test drive it before my missus had a long trip up to Leeds.

She told me that it felt juddery at 70mph, but fairly smooth at 50.

I was panicking about whether or not I'd tightened the nuts up properly etc etc but went round them all and they were all OK.

I had a little time to check the tyres this weekend to see if there were any problems there.

Lo and behold, one of them is split. eek

I've ordered another pair, but what is most likely to cause this? Too much negative camber or age of tyres?

Low tyre pressure can cause that. (yes, on the inner edge only)

Your swapping winter and summer tyres , so the life of the tyre will be increased , so what is the date of manufacture, ( the date is some where amongst the small numbers on the side walls) tyres In excess of 5 years old are beginning to age and will be affected by the over winter storage conditions to which the have been subjected to, may also have not helped with the tyre beginning to fall apart , look for cracking between the tread blocks.

And that inner rim looks a bit odd !

Looking at the photo again that tyre is pretty well worn and on my car would be changed in any case , with a serious Geo check to see why the inner edge is wearing so much, albeit my rears do that any way due to slightly non standard camber settings.

The inner rim is the paint peeling off. They're LE Mans wheels and apparently, 'they all do that sir.' All 4 wheels have bubbling or peeling paint on the insides.

There's 4mm of tread on both fronts and I was planning to change them when they got down to 3mm but now I have no choice.

As for the geo - I had the same problem with my 530d, had there's so much negative camber set up as standard. Might still be worth it though as it's only the fronts.

I've heard about this date of manufacture thing before but never known what to look out for. Is it a standard date format, or is it one of those codes I have to decipher?

Look for four digits, usually preceded by "DOT".

DOT wwyy, where ww is the week number and yy is the year. This is week 27, 2004.

Cheers all.

I think I probably have been running the pressures lower than recommended as the recommended pressures seemed really high on the A6 - 42 on the fronts and 38 on the rears.

Think I was running about 38 all round.

You will probably find its a dynamic of FWD cars (unless its quattro) Mondeo's Jaguar x type and SAAB 9-3 all guilty of this.

Its all about the camber, they are all set up for cornering rather than chilling on the motorway.

We had issues with tyre wear on our C5 A6 on 17s. It would wear the inner edge on the rear tyres and the outer edge on the fronts, so after swapping tyres front to back they would end up losing all the tread off the edges while still having decent tread in the centre. Geometry was spot on, but the car got a lot of town use so scrubbed the tyre edges a lot. Higher than stock pressures will reduce this a bit, but lower will definitely make it worse.

Some tyres seem to resist this kind of wear better than others. I've seen Vred's fall to pieces in a similar way to your picture. Conti SC5 wear out crazy fast. Michelins seem to last the longest.

It's a 3.0TDi quattro.

Checked the fronts and the date is 16th week 2012.

I had this a few years ago with 2 year old Pirelli P Zeros - quite a shock at the MOT as tyres were newish with only lower mileage good tread & correct pressures checked weekly.

May be due to tyre manufacture variances or extremes of use or unseen damage on the inner rim spreading around the carcass as it weakens......
