My local garage have just had a very clean Audi A6 2.5tdi Allroad delivered by RAC transporter. It is finished in green with black leather. Its a 05 plate, manual and very clean.

The cambelt snapped and it needs an engine or re-build.

I am keen to buy the car, what sort of value should i offer? My mechanic has told me that i should budget approx £3k for a new engine to be supplied, fitted, DMF, Water pump, clutch etc....

Is it worth buying?

Looking at Autotrader a tidy 05 one is worth between £4k and £5.5k so if you can get it for 1500 then maybe.

Unless you can do the work yourself, no, IMO. I had one of these for ten years and although it was very capable once things started to go – engine and suspension, it just became a complete money pit. A money pit without any redeeming charm. I was quite glad to see the back of it in the end. The new AllRoads are completely different animals however, I love the one I have at the moment.

Yes; there's a lot that could be wrong with it and inevitably you'll end up buying more than an initial estimate as you find bits missing/broken/damaged, a big bag of bolts, various gaskets...

...and then you discover after you think it's finished that the suspension leaks, air conditioning doesn't work and there are a load of knackered suspension bushes.

5 grand buys that car with a decent spec and in nice order; if you've got to spend 3-4 on it then it isn't really worth anything if you're factoring in any 'aggro' money. If it ends up costing you 5 grand you may as well buy one that already works.

I remember when these first came out Audi used to use them for their roadside assistance program. Sadly, the Allroads were unreliable even when new. I can't imagine anyone being daft enough to buy one now.
