A4 2.0 TFSI B7 Cam Chain Tensioner Issue
Discussion
So what exactly are the symptoms for the dreaded cam chain tensioner rattle on the B7 2.0 TFSI engine?
In my case a BUL code engine 220hp 2006 with 50k, I keep reading and hearing about this issue but how can you tell if chain is stretched or tensioner worn? The engine is well known as being noisy anyway at idle for a petrol due to high pressure injectors & fuel pump, however, I don't want to spend £3-500 on preventative maintenance on the off chance.
I anticipate there is a rattle when the oil/engine is warm but what & where should I be listening out for, or is it very apparent, how common is it, does it affect all engine codes? I wouldn't say mine is any noisier than 6 years ago with 20k.
Dr G perhaps?

Didn't you post another thread on this exact same issue a few months back?
All the 2.0 EA113 engines are noisy. Inspecting the secondary cam chain for slack (the primary cam drive is via a belt on these engines) isn't particularly arduous though actually changing the chain and tensioner is a massive ball-ache.
I'm not sure it actually constitutes an "issue" either. The number of people reporting verified secondary cam chain issues in EA113 engines (as in people who actually demonstrated their issue is the secondary chain rather than something more likely) is very, very low and most people who suspect they have an issue don't have any symptoms which can't be better explained by HPFP cam follower wear. Personally I don't think there's actually a problem with the chains or tensioners at all.
A decently competent specialist should be able to check the chain for unnecessary slack but I suspect if it's sounding tappety or rattly the most likely culprit will either be the HPFP cam follower or something in proximity to the engine simply being loose. Thing the wastegate actuator clip is a common cause of this.

With the Golf is usually the early AXX engines that suffer.
