2 weeks into V10 RS6 ownership - first thoughts
Discussion
I've had a couple of post on here, asking for advice or assistance on my hunt for the new family wagon, particular thanks to Dr G for help on a particular one that I'm glad I didn't go through with, so I thought I'd put down a few mad ramblings after the first 2 weeks.
I ended up purchasing a late 2008, Daytona Grey RS6 Avant with 45kmiles from an independent dealer in Worcester, with full history and what appeared to be a really well looked after and clean car. I've got intentions over the next 12 -18 months of a little fettling so wanted one that hadn't been messed with.
First thoughts are that the RS6, in standard form, is somewhat quieter and much, much quicker than I expected.
I've had a number of quick cars over the years, mainly Jap (V3 and V5 Impreza STI's, Legacy's, Forester XT & STI's, MR2 Turbo track cars) and German (Audi S4 B7's, C5 S6 and RS6, BMW 535D, Passat 3.2 and R36) but this is mind bending quick, there is a small lack of drama on the first few moments, but then the rush is reminiscent of falling off a cliff. 30 to (cough, cough) 70ish is like nothing else I've been in, and the grip and stability again, takes your breath away. A 2plus tonne car is never going to feel as purposeful and agile as an much lighter sports car, but boy, does the power and grip go some way to hiding the bulk.
The noise at slow speeds, certainly pottering around is nothing to write home about. The dogs used to be very aware of the V8 rumble from the last car on a standard exhaust, but in this I can get in the drive without notice. The bellow, and that is the only way to describe it, occurs after 4kRPM and builds to something like a landslide coming at you as you head to the redline, with a very satisfying, deep bass "whump" on the upshift, that makes me giggle like a child.
The other striking thing is its compliance at slow speed, I was expecting it to be a bit of a handful at town driving speed, but the weighting on the steering works well at both start-stop commuter speeds, as well as making progress. Brakes are spot on, with progressive feel all the way through. One of the pleasant surprises has been the suspension, the comfort setting is really that, Absorbing most of the crater sized pot holes in rural Sussex, while in Dynamic or Sport on decent black top, gives more than enough information on what's going on underneath.
I've managed to fit a full size door plus half the garage to do a tip run, take the missus out for the evening in comfort and managed to get 13.8MPG on a B road blat. I've sung the praise of the B7 S4 as a contender for the "ultimate" fast family estate quite a few times on here, but if you can live with the running costs, there might be another winner!

I'm sure the Rs6 is a great car but for me ut just has no real *want* factor....it looks too plain which I guess is part of the package, but it just lacks that special something
Sure it's fast, but having driven one I found it to be huge and wallowy, a licence loser for sure but no real fun I'm my experience......
Having said that I may well be in the minority as they seem to be well liked out there
