Hi Pistonheaders!

Wonder if you can help me or tell me if im being stupid!

I currently drive a 2010 F10 BMW 520d se, manual. Very capable car but bit dull, would prefer more power and 4ws would be useful

My mileage has just reduced from about 35k to 20-22k and new job with fuel card so fuel economy not such a major concern and I've always fancied an A8.

Have seen s 2007 57 plate A8 3.0 TDI Quattro Sport with just 54k on the clock. Has full service history and looks very smart.

Have also just moved house and quite hilly where we are - anyone know how usable it would be in snow? Wife would kill me if I changed and then the car was crap in bad weather!

Any comments, thoughts and advice appreciated.

Mike

It will certainly be much better in bad weather than your BMW ever was...

If it's any help to you; one of my customers was a dyed in the wool BMW man and always drove 7 series. After the collosal repair bills on his last one I talked him into an A8, and it was a 3.0 TDi. He wouldn't drive anything else now.

Unbeatable in bad weather.

I did 120k in my A8. Amazingly cheap to run and better than my Range Rover in snow - seriously unbelievable and that wasn't on winter tyres. Not the most interesting car I have owned but without question the best mode of transport, by a country mile

Snow ability - Goes well, stops and turns as badly as any other heavy car on wide summer tyres.

ie. Its easy to get into trouble by going faster than you should in the snow

Thanks guys. Anything I should know about maintenance - any huge servicing items as I'd be likely to have it past 100k?

A8s of that vintage are really, really good quality. Ensure that the screen in the dash ejects properly and that the suspension behaves. The screen is a cheapish fix but annoying and suspension faults are rare but fairly expensive to work on.

A set of ebay 18s and some quality winter tyres will make it almost unstoppable in crappy weather.

In my experience the a6 Quattro was definitely unstoppable on summer tyres in the snow.............

That's all. The 3.0 fell through and I am now looking at a 4.2tdi with 74k on the clock. Looks beautiful.
