Just looking for some opinions and thoughts. Current finance deals on offer will get me either car for virtually similar money. I've driven both and really like both cars in different ways. Just wondering if any owners of either car would care to share their thoughts or experiences?

Personally if you don't need the space go gti. If you do then vrs. The vrs is excellent but IMO in 3 years time the gti will hold money better

Might as well throw the Leon Cupra into the equation as well, more power and a sharper drive than both, but at the expense of interior plastics.

Seat is for younger "boy racers" 1 child/ maybe 2 teenagers
VRS is for boy racers with a larger family 2 small kids (pushchairs)
VW Golf is for singletons, who appreciate the finer things in life...
Audi S3 is for the ones, who haven't got anything better to spend their money on, other than designer things

Cars, expressed into the way people shop, (may help you decide!!! lol) PS I have a Skoda and this is meant as a joke, (VW on the way)

Skoda - Primark/ Matalan and ALDI/ Iceland/ Lidl
Seat - River Island, Burton, fk and Tesco's/Morrisons
VW - Next/ JD sports and Sainsburys
Audi - Selfridges, designer and Waitrose

Haha that did make me chuckle. From your first list, the Golf is closest to me I suppose and with the second list I'm a mix of the lower three. Guess it should be the Golf then lol.

The Skoda deal is 0% finance right now though with low desposit. Not a reason to buy a car I know, but over 3.5 years it means a fair bit more money for me to spend on Cuban cigars and Imported Jamon wink)

The bigger cabin in the VRS was "boomier" compared to the Golf

After discounts on a new car the golf GTI will be between 3-4k more expensive than the Octavia and the gap will grow wider on the secondhand market.Golf is a better quality car but both are nice.

Some pretty interesting offers on the GTI at the moment. I've heard as much as £3000 dealer contribution from the 31st July...

Simpsons Skoda are doing a 2 year hire purchase, which is an excellent deal. My local dealer in Northern Ireland- Mervyn Stewart is doing 0% PCP over 4 years. Both dealers websites have full details.

Orange wheels put me in touch with a dealer in England who are offering 3k discount and then you get a VW contribution of £1250 if you take their finance. An awful lot of car for £24k, but their interest rate is 6.3% so quite high.

How do the specs match up?

golf is much better specced, especially now as KESSY, nav and winter pack is standard.

A very humbly specced Octavia is knocking on the door of £30k now , hardly Primark

The price is pretty close nowadays, I agree with the earlier post if you dont need the space the Golf makes more sense

If the cost is similar, the only reason to go Octavia would be if you need a cavernous boot. The old USP, aside from boot space, was that they were a fair bit cheaper.

With the dealer discount, the Golf is better value as it comes with things like adaptive cruise control, front parking sensors as opposed to just rear on Octavia, power folding door mirrors and I'm sure other things I've missed. The big thing I suppose is that the finance deal on the Skoda is much better as I can have it at 0% versus 6.3 with VW. I know it's all about the car, and the Golf is technically worth more to start with so I suppose that helps balance things out a bit. First world problems eh! Lol.

I was genuinely amazed by the size of the boot. The sales woman was able to get in and have enough room for a threesome.

Or if you need to take adults in the back seats , or three kids for that matter , the Golf feels pretty pokey inside after the Octy
