Hi all.
With prices being very cheap at the moment.I am toying with the idea of purchasing a mk3 golf GTI as a possible investment. I would probably buy a car that needs small jobs doing to it which I would gradually do. Mk2 Gtis are going up in value. Which variant would be the best buy 8v or 16v and 3 door or 5 door? Would it be a good idea?

Thanks

Had her 20 years. Still had 8 months MOT, but bits & pieces needed doing & I lost interest.

Mk3s are unloved so I can't see any investment potential.

Not so, there is a growing fondness.

But, I agree, unlikely to appreciate too much in excess of running/maintain costs

I don't think mk3 love will reach the levels of the mk1+2 golf, If I were in the market for a mk3 i'd go for an anniversary GTI 16v or a Vr6...

I'm a die hard Golf fanatic, but the MK3 has always left me a bit cold, as it appears most of the Golf fans out there.

I'm with Kerrly, the only one's that might be any good as an investment would be a 16V Anni or a VR6 ideally a Highline,

I've a very cheap but very good 3 door manual VR6 parked outside I'm having bad thoughts about.

Would only need a couple of touches to return it to standard. And somewhere to keep the damn thing...

Id say apart from the mk2 gti, the only potential investements are mk4 r32 and the edition 30

You forgot the mk1,and think the op is talking gti so no r32 allowed, mk5 will eventually go like mk1 and 2 gti

If you read the reply Royce44 said the 'only potential' investment is a MK4 R32 or ED 30....'potential' being the operative word. MK1 GTi's have already gone through the roof price wise and I think the OP is only looking at MK3 GTi's as they are dirt cheap.

UKMK3S try them, they might be able to help better. Having owned 2 GTI 8v's and currently a VR6 i'd say the VR is the one to have but it doesnt have the same ring to me as the GTI, but it makes a fantastic sound.

^This.

Enjoy it for what it is but its unlikely to be worth much before 20years time and it wont last anywhere near that long anyway.

Agreed. The mk3 Gti was rubbish.

It stands out as the car I've been most let down by - and I was only 19 when I had one for a weekend to thrash about in so it didn't need to be great to impress.

I'm sure I've heard that the model we got as a Gti wasn't even badged Gti in Europe..

Thanks for all your replies chaps. It seems that 16v Gtis, special editions or Vr6 are the way to go. I drove mk3 a few years ago and enjoyed driving it thought it was a lot better than the mk4 GTI we had.

Dr G any more details on that Vr6 you have please?

Thanks again for your help.
