4.2 audi s4 fuel??
Discussion
hi there, I'm thinking of buying an Audi s4 b6 and curious to know what the handbook says the ideal fuel is for this car?? been searching through the net for ages and couldn't find anything, so hope someone could help here, also any one on here think there should be a separate forum for S4's? ive been used to M3 forums here and TVR chimaera forums (probably cos ive owned those cars) but if I were to buy an Audi S4 it looks like Id be lumbered with "other marques" and hope someone replies :-( thanks in advance

I always put momentum in my M3 because the handbook said so, so wouldn't know if it was any better or worse on 95. any way as I got some replies what are they like to live with? as thirsty or better on fuel than say an e39 m5? are they easily tuneable? I remember the M3 returned reasonable fuel economy as it is more of a modest size, however as it was a really well tuned and sorted engine, there wasn't much that could be done to it without spending a fortune
Surely though if a car is mapped for 95 ron in the factory, you won't see any difference in performance or economy unless you tell the computer it's getting better quality fuel, so if a car is mapped for a certain performance using 98 ron like the bmw m3 is, you will get a loss of power and economy using 95 and it will be restored as soon as the correct fuel is added, so I was curious as to what the the handbook says the s4 should use
The S4 has a knock sensor, you loose approx. 20bhp using 95ron instead of 98ron, all official figures are using 98ron.
Don't swap from an M3 to an S4, a truly hateful car in every respect. Tell a lie, with nav and all the toys the interior is not too bad, but to drive it fails in ever area that makes a car fun.
So heavy up front.
Understeers like a wrong 'un.
Gearbox is horrible as are the ratios, so makes it just plain annoying to drive and means you're revving the nuts off it at 85mph (manual) and it is doing 18mpg.
A mapped 2.0T Quattro is a much nicer car if you must have an Audi Avant.
No point having a separate sub forum as this section is dead enough as it is anyway.
I warn you now, keep your M3, you will regret it otherwise.
I swapped my 535d and M3 for an S4 avant, hated it, swapped it after a few months for a 335i Sport Touring, much better car all round.

I was using my S4 as a daily, I got 18mpg from it, I did some 4000 miles in 10 weeks.
As a comparison my M3 returned 29mpg doing the same runs.
It is a thirsty old beast.
Auto is much nicer car, better geared, sat at 80mph it is seeing around 40% better mpg figures than the manual.
The manual is such short ratios, many said just use 2nd, 4th and 6th. Seriously!!?
It was a real effort round town and in traffic.
The pedals are all different heights and made it uncomfortable after an hour or so.
They don't joke when they say the engine is in front of the axle, it is, it understeers horribly and you never feel the Quattro as you can't take corners fast enough to really need it.
The steering is seriously numb, no feedback at all.
The M3 was a much, much quicker car in all conditions. In fact our mapped 120d was a quicker car as soon as there were any corners involved.
2.0T Quattro with a map to 260bhp is a much better proposition imho. 335i sport is better still, but why swap an M3 for a 335i?

Interestingly, I disagree with every single part of this post. As a comparison my M3 returned 29mpg doing the same runs.

Almost 4 years ago, had my heart totally set on a 335i M-Sport... until I drove one. Incredibly harsh ride (Think it was on 18's with run-flats) and the auto was rough and jerky... there was no way I could live with it.
Ended up purchasing a manual B6 S4 sedan, and have had that now for 3.5 years.
Over this time I have averaged about 25mpg, can get up to 30mpg, and if I have the foot down on a short journey, never less than 20mpg. Almost all of my driving is mixed highway/town driving.
I have owned 21 cars now over the last 19 years, and this is the best car I have ever driven around town and in traffic. The torque down low is fantastic, can take off very slow, and can creep happily along at 800rpm without any surging whatsoever.
The pedal heights and positioning are great and heel/toe is an absolute breeze, even with wife and kids in the car (who are none the wiser you're even doing it). You can get out of the car from a 4-6 hour journey without any trouble at all, in fact I regularly do so.
If people think this car does not oversteer, they obviously have never taken ESP off, and pushed hard at all. It is the most well balanced car I have owned (with oversteer if you want it), and belies it's 1660kg weight. The steering on our roads has been great, and very communicative. I believe this is a hydraulic rack with servo assist, which could explain how they can generate great open road feel with low speed ease of turning so well.
Not trying to be argumentative, it's just very interesting how people can have such differing opinions of the same car. My other rides are currently a 95 WRX RA and a Giulietta QV.
