Cooling fans draining battery Mk5 Golf 1.6 FSi

The cooling fans on Mrs AB8219's Golf are draining the battery. Disconnecting the socket at the base of the fans works, but obviously I need to address the fault.

Does anyone know if there is a separate 'Fan Control Module'? Or a relay somewhere that I need to change? Googling isn't giving a definitive answer.

I've read on one forum that the module is built into the fans, does that mean I have to change the whole panel that the fans are on?

Any advice appreciated.

If it's like a BMW the control module is part of the fan.
