C6 RS6 Oil - Long Life v Annual
Discussion
Can somebody do me a favour and check the owners manual for me? I'm working away at the moment.
Car just had a service and the invoice says they used Castrol SLX Longlife. The car is on Annual Servicing and I'm sure the manual says that long life oil should only be used in small quantities for a top up if the car is on annual servicing (although I might have got it the wrong way and it's long life that should only use small amounts of regular).
Can't find a copy of the owners manual on the web.
TIA

It's the oil that's important - most garages use longlife oil irrespective of service regime, as it's cheaper than keeping stock of both and VAG have, I think, advised their dealers to do so.
I had to ask my dealer 3 times to confirm what oil they'd used at the last service so I could buy a litre for topping up (from them!). Turned out it was a weird Shell choice in a different grade, but listed as an acceptable alternative! Oil usage has dropped to almost nothing since....

I'm not sure that using a longlife oil in such a high perfomance car is necessarily the best thing for longevity (regardless of Audi's advice) so I put in the best oil I can afford in my RS6 and change it regularly every 5k miles (may sound excessive) because good oil is so important, even more so if your car is remapped.
An oil change with Castrol Edge 5w30 is around £200 at most at an indy if you supply the oil/filter yourself (£130 for oil/filter from Eurocarparts).

It pretty much is the best thing, short of much more expensive Ester based products, which don't carry the Audi approvals. The issue with longlife oils, if you can call it an issue, is the extended drain intervals Audi allow/suggest you follow. I'm not sure there's any real difference between Edge and SLX, but you'd need to look on the Castrol website and download the spec sheets and compare. If both have the relevant Audi approval then they are both as good as each other for an annual change on a low miles per annum car.
I wouldn't personally use an ECP oil filter - there's been plenty of evidence in the past of the differences between an OEM part and a pattern one when it comes to oil filters that the few extra quid from TPS for a genuine one is money well spent.
I've run my S8 on Ester based Fuchs oils for years, but the lack of an Audi spec approval doesn't bother me on a 13 year old car. On the S5 I stick to what my main dealer uses (Shell in their case) and it gets done annually irrespective of miles, using the longlife spec oil. This has been VAG practice for a number of years now in main dealers.
As an example, the link below is the TPS oil chooses - it only supplies info on the oils they sell, but for annual or longlife it lists the same products in most cases

What you don't want to use is the minimum spec annual change oil for a car that's on extended intervals.
I just looked up the RS6 on there and it just lists the same products for both service regimes.
Cheers for the info.
The Castrol SLX on the invoice is actually a discontinued oil now, according to Castrol website, replaced by Edge.
If it is the same regardless of long life or interval then it would be good to at least say what they used. It might just be a relic of their system that hasn't been updated.

Yeah, it would. My local dealer doesn't tell you what they use at all! It's usually either Castrol or Shell products, but even then the range of different but similar products is insane from a customer point of view.
Once I'd established what they'd used, found you couldn't buy it anywhere as a retail product without buying a 10 pack of 1 litre bottles, it turned out the dealer itself was the cheapest place to buy the right top up bottle!
