Golf mk7 gtd any good?
Discussion
Looking at upgrading my Ibiza fr to a golf gtd
Fancied the golf r but I do 20k + miles a year so it's not rly an option
So is it any good will it fit my wife and 2 kids (2yr old and a 5 week old?)
Limited on budget and deposit otherwise it would have been the 330d touring
What they like to live with?
Is the dsg box smooth?
Anybody had the dtuk tuning box fitted?

I got one this year and love it! Mine is the 5dr DSG. I do 25k miles a year and it makes the long drives totally effortless. Punchy performance when you want it but also economical (regularly see mid 50s mpg). The DSG 'box suits the car very well and makes for a killer combination with the standard adaptive cruise, meaning the car practically drives itself on the motorway with the ability to come to a complete stop.
I bought it for the adaptive tbh. Was doing regular motorway work and those 50's were killing me. Adaptive made it somewhat better. IIRC the ford system was £700, Volvo £1400 and the Audi £2500. Was very pleased when I discovered is standard on the GTD.
I'm not too far from you (York) if you fancy coming over and taking a look you are welcome to. Can show you how to plumb the box in, fairly simple job but easier once you seen it.

Thanks for that may take you up on it I do alot of work in the York area (supply the fruit machines in places like the parish)I'm not too far from you (York) if you fancy coming over and taking a look you are welcome to. My commute for work in generally over to York and the East Coast and it's so easy for the speed to creep especially on the a64! And u know how bad that is for cameras (nearly been caught a few times)
Is it true the gtd also comes with speed limit display as I'd find that handy as well?

Similar to me with adaptive, VW are pretty much the only manufacturer offering it standard on certain models and it's a big selling point. Audis for example don't get it.
I've noticed that others are quite expensive, the golf for the money seems to be better equipped than all its rivals imo I've got a GTI but the main points are the same between the two models. DSG is very good, I wanted an auto car and I'm very pleased with it. The adaptive cruise is useful too, it's a bit unnerving the first time it takes it all the way to a stop but it works very well.
These also have autohold and auto handbrake which are brilliant. Just bring the car to a stop at the lights with the foot brake as normal, auto hold kicks in and stops the car from creeping forward, just press the accelerator to go again when you are ready. Handbrake works the same but when you turn the ignition off it will fully apply for you.
To get the speed limit display you will need the lane assist camera and the pro nav I believe. You will need to get this coded via VCDS as it's not officially available in the UK.
The lane assist option is a rare one and on it's own it's not really worth it however it also comes with blind spot monitoring and Dynamic headlights. These are the work of a genius, it's amazing being able to drive along with full main beam but not dazzling anyone.
GTD's also come with winter pack, nav and keyless as standard now too.

Also guys what's your mpg like
Driven hard?
Driven carefully @55/60mph on cruise on s motorway
And driven normally u know round town to shops quick drive down the motorway between 70/80 then round town again
The book says 76mpg extra urban
And in the 50s round town with a combined of 64mpg
How achievable is that?

The technology behind lane assist is incredible as combined with ACC and DSG it gives the car capability for autonomous highway driving. It will literally drive itself and keep to a lane. However VW have restricted it to a maximum of about 10 seconds until you have to take over the steering yourself, so the practical usability is sadly very limited! Presumably due to regulatory/ legal reasons.lee_fr200 said:

Depends what you mean, late 30s/ low 40s probably Driven hard?

60 upwards is possible driven with economy in mind, but why buy the car for thatlee_fr200 said:

Not really achievable, so don't buy based on those claims And in the 50s round town with a combined of 64mpg

My long term average is sat at about 51mpg currently. I would say about 80% of my driving is sat on the motorway with the ACC set to 80mph. Rest is short runs around town.
The car isn't been bought to travel everywhere like its pants are on fire otherwise it would be a gti or a R
This is to travel 20k miles per year mainly on motorways comfortably with a nice amount of toys!
I'm put off the R due to the silly amount of thefts, I rly don't want my family in a threatening position and its poor mpg
The gti while nice I'm sure isn't great on fuel either, so this leaves the gtd which can give decent performance but then be frugal when needed, the roads I drive on have a lot of mobile cameras (A64 is terrible and the Brid and Scarborough roads)
When used for this I drive carefully usually around 50/60mph as this benefits me

The leather is nice, I have it and I much prefer it over the tartan trim, I know this isn't the purest point of view but I don't care. It's not as good quality as the price suggests as there is a fair amount of fake leather on the seat back but the main parts are good.
The GTI forum also has a lot of GTD traffic too which might help you out http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?board=128....

After my last few turbo petrols I actually have enjoyed my derv Ibiza as it's been "nippy" and great on fuel
And I want this next car to follow suit
Every petrol turbo car I've had while sounding glorious has left me skint I had a highly modified 2002 corsa c with zlet engine and on full boost could happily lose £10 of fuel in 15 miles and on a run managed 45 miles to £10 I find the sound smell and drama of petrol turbos too addictive and then it costs me!
The diesels are all torque don't sound great and don't smell great so I'm not more inclined to drive everywhere quick
