Where are all the Petrol A6s?
Discussion
I have a 58 A6 2.0 TDIe which I bought for commuting as I had an 80 mile round trip to work everyday.
I now have a job a couple of miles away and am thinking that the diesel might not be a good option, especially as I already have had some problems with the DPF.
However, I looked on auto trader for A6 petrol of a similar age with the view of doing a straight swap. Searching nationally brings back about 5 cars, one of which is a CatD. Diesels bring back over 80.
I knew the diesels were more popular but wasn't expecting to not be able to find any petrols hardly.

I'd question the sanity of anyone buying a petrol A6.
Why? I had a 2.4 years ago. Bloody brilliant car, did 150K without any issues. Its got to be better than driving a DPF'd diesel 6 miles twice a day.

Yeah, but as said above, you don't buy an A6 to do 6 miles twice a day. It's a car built for motorways, and motorways mean mileage, and mileage means diesel.

16 years old and 146K and drives like new. The only thing I've replaced is the DMF. the 2.4 has to be the quietest engine in production; absolutely beautiful power unit and economical beyond belief for such a big car.
Apart from anything else, my conscience wouldn't let me drive a diesel now. The realisation of the toxic effects of diesel particulates is going to kick in with a vengeance anytime now.

I had the same issue changing my previous A6 Avant 2.4 petrol - very smooth lovely engine, if not the most powerful, but fuel consumption not much different to my replacement 3.0 tdi which is all I could get due to the lack of newer A6 petrols.
3.0 tdi as the doctor states is nice (much nicer than 2.0 tdi) but its no petrol & about he same on fuel around town as the petrol plus the DPF worries which I seem to have avoided so far despite a 2 mile commute each day, it feels wasted.
I prefer driving my A4 petrol TFSI overall, but I guess i'll have the same issue when I come to replace that now the fleet buy the majority of them.

What's the (approximate) budget 944fan? PH is full of classified ad trawlers, I'm sure we can find something that'll float your boat.
To be honest I was thinking that as my diesel is probably worth more than an equivalent petrol then I could do a straight swap. I guess my car is probably worth about £7K.We've just shelled out on a new car for the wife so don't really want to start spending loads for the sake of it.

Yes, but 12 MPG and the service costs of a 747. Let's wait and see how many of them are about in 16 years time.

12 mpg??J
Things have moved on a bit since the first two RS6s - and old Merc V8s
. CO2 223g (if you believe Audi) and 29mpg on 200 mile round trip to London last week - and was driving briskly where I could. Overall mpg since I have had the car is 23mpg.
Not great but worth every penny.

Its quite old but this caught my eye:

Suspect the service costs might be a bit high

A8 isn't actually a bad shout at that money if you can find something cherished; they're strong but complicated so a neglected one can get expensive.
There are petrol A6s out there at that money:

Might even track down a 4.2.
