Golf 7R - Oil light
Discussion
Does it have/can it be fitted with a regular dipstick to act as a backup check? I know most modern Audis don't come with one as standard, but models with the same block that pre-date the change allow you to put one in very simply for under £10 after removing a bung in the tube.
I suppose you could use a litre of oil in 4k miles during early stages. Were you parked on a hill when it first issued the low oil warning, or driving along?

In which case, park it on the flat and leave it a while and check it following any specifics in the handbook in terms of hot or cold engine before adding oil. Could be a dodgy sensor but at least if the dipstick confirms it has used a load you can make sure it's bang on the mark after topping up and then monitor it.Wouldn't be unheard of for a car to come off the line and go through PDI with the oil nowhere near the max mark so best bet is get it onto max and note the mileage. If it comes on again rather too quickly at least you'll have a measure of the amount used over what mileage.
Thanks for the swift replies.
I will of course check when I'm home from work, it was just my wife text me saying the Oil light was on, so have no idea as to wether it was on flat surface or a hill?
I was just intrigued as to wether these Vag units, especially the R consumed a lot of Oil. Seemed like a lot to me, but I naturally, or naively assumed the Oil would be Maxed when given to me from the Dealer?!

Despite the suggestion that engines don't need to be 'run in' any more, they do still bed in over a period of time. Depending on what you read on t'interweb that can be minutes or 10s of thousands of miles! A degree of oil usage in the first 10k miles is probably to be expected but until you've actually established an x amount of oil in y miles it's not really possible to determine if it's excessive or not.
If it's simply 'low' on oil it shouldn't matter if it's not topped up immediately - if it's the first time the warning has come on you've just reached the point of the alert being triggered, but unless it's escaping at a rate of knots it isn't realistically going to drop any more before you get home
unless you're abroad for 6 months of something lol

The EA888 engine is somewhat infamous for its oil consumption.
Apparently the handbook says up to 1 litre per 1200 miles is considered normal.
Just for balance, my R has 20000 miles on it now and hasn't used a drop between services.....but you're right about the handbook. Think I would've traded it in by now if mine used that much.Apparently the handbook says up to 1 litre per 1200 miles is considered normal.
