I know its a touchy subject and im fully aware of the legalities but has anyone retro fitted a Hid kit to their car they could recommend?
Im guessing most of the stuff on sale in of Chinese origin?
Im looking to improve the lights on my B5.5 Passat, ive already cleaned them up well and considered just upgrading the bulbs but have read mixed reports about longevity of osram nightbreakers etc.
Any advice is much appreciated.

Has it got projector lights?

If not don't buy HIDs, or if you really must make sure you get the 35w H7R ones. The R is for reflector, they have a different design to stop glare to oncoming traffic.

I believe they are projector but will have to check.

Aftermarket HIDs are hateful, in the main. The nightbreaker etc bulbs do make a noticeable difference and on our A6 we used to have (with projectors) they would typically last 2 years, which isn't too bad given the price you can get them for. Never once got flashed so assume the additional brightness did not cause dazzle to oncoming drivers.

Our old Passat (1998) didn't have projectors and the headlights were dreadful as the car aged - I ended up buying a pair of new lights off ebay as the reflectors and lenses were clouded to hell. Fitting HIDs wouldn't have helped as so much of the light output was being sucked up by the knackered materials.

As Adrian says Osram Nightbreaker plus are surprisingly good for the outlay.

Check what voltage you're getting at the connector too. You may well not be getting the full 12v with a few old, perished wires and dirty connectors.

Ive just fitted them to my GF's 2005 BMW X5. The car has self levelling suspension and head lamp washers, so can legally run HIDs.

Her car also has self levellers in the headlights. When you turn them on, you can see them dip down and then come up to the correct level.

It was easy to fit the kit and the light difference is superb. It was dire before.

I got the HIDS4U kit. It all fitted, came with the CAMBUS over rides and it works perfectly.

If you have projector lenses, you don't need the 'R' capsules (they aren't called bulbs). The lens does the cut off.

Annoyingly these are not a legal requirement; the MOT revisions were really half-baked.

No, I went for H7 as I was under the impression H7R is for non projector headlights.

Oh, you have projectors then?

I thought it was only the xenon fitted cars that had them.

Lots of cars have projector style headlights that are not xenon. My son's 2015 Fiesta ST has projector head lights.

Same as others, I fitted non R equivalents.

The cut off from the projector lenses is perfect.

Yeah sorry, I meant I thought the B5 Passat was reflector when halogen.

About six years ago I fitted a set of HID's with the Cambus module from HIDS4U to a B6 A4 Avant I previously owned. That had projector style headlights and the difference was very noticeable.
