We have the DVD based Sat Nav in our 58 plate A6.

But, as time goes on, it's becoming more and more problematic as it doesn't include many new roads.

Long story short, we're driving to the alps again this year, and while it didn't give us many problems last time, it did prove problematic around Reims where I wanted to stop off and see the old pit lane from the circuit there.

There are new motorways all around there and we ended up not being able to get off and go see it.

This year, one of the people we're driving down with will be in France the week we go, and is planning to extend her work trip so that we pick her up en route. And we need to do so from Reims.

So I wanted to update.

Our car is pre-facelift, and colour screen, so I wondered which version to look out for.

Also, I'm unsure about whether to go genuine, or get a disc from somewhere, less, Audi.

We were given a free 2010 disc from someone I know, but I had heard they can mess up your software. And I don't want to do that...

I bought two sets of discs, the first was a 2015 map from a random "Audi Map Upgrade" website which, when it arrived, was obviously a home burnt DVD with a stuck on label. It worked perfectly for about 6 months then slowly started to "fail" after about an hour of driving (would revert back to address screen and then switch off). I put it down to heat causing an issue with the disc making it unreadable by warping it slightly as the OEM Audi discs are thicker than home use ones (the disc was clean and not skipping).

The second set was a 5 CD/DVD set from Ebay (3 MMi software upgrade CD's and 2 Map DVDs of East/West Europe) which I'm guessing are genuine Audi (hologram'd discs etc) and they've been fine but I've only had these since Dec so time will tell I suppose.

  • *EDITED*** as I can't spell.

Anyone know how to update the 3G MMI Nav on a 2010 A6?

Funnily enough it was your post that made me want to stop off there.

How do I know which is my correct version?

It's the full colour screen, but it's the version with just the knob, rather than the joystick.

Make sure you use quality discs (verbatim or taiyo yuden) and burn as slowly as your software allows

The 2g system is very tolerant of cloned discs - any problems generally mean the drive itself is dying anyway

Pm me if you struggle

HDD based or DVD? Can't recall if both were available on the A6, but I know both can be had on the A5

Both can be done but if hdd based and needing firmware updates too it'll take half a day to do

Updates aside - the issue with discs not lasting a long time can be resolved (legally) by backing up your disc to a 16gig SD card. Check the manual but I believe it's the SDHC format that's ok to use (might be SDXC that's not) - certainly works fine in my A5 (which has dvd-nav with the annoying 5 character postcode search)

That applies to 3G Basic, where you have the option to copy across the data from the DVD to an SD card, therefore losing one of the SD card slots to use for music.

The card slot will happily read up to 32GB SDHC cards, but the map files copied across like this only take up about 8GB of space so there's no point having a bigger card than about 16GB in there.

I'm not sure what you meant by this.

If it's OK, can I send you an email? Can't see how to do PMs on the forum.

HDD based, can it be done from home?

I vaguely remember hearing awhile ago that it may need a dealer visit. If you could direct me to where I could get discs to do at home would be much appreciated.

Thanks to all for the help and advice.

I followed the two links to the discs on ebay, figured I'd give it a go.

I ordered them and will try and update and install at the weekend.

Any tips or watch outs?

Just follow the instructions - including hooking the car up to a charger.

There are charging points under the bonnet.

Did I message you links, or did I forget?!
