My mothers 10 plate mk6 Golf 1.4 TSi has a noticeable rattle from cold start which quietens down after a couple of seconds.
A bit of casual Google research has me worried about possible chain tensioner issues, so I asked her to take the car to the local VW dealer who have booked it in for a look, but stated that if there is a problem it is likely to be a 'very expensive' fix. Thing is, the car has an extended VW comprehensive warranty underwritten by Mondial, which said dealer thinks is unlikely to cover it as it would only cover manufacturer defects (which surely this is)....
Sounds like she is in for an expensive time, is the dealer being sly in hiding the fact this is a known issue and should it be covered under warranty? Opinions please!

Probably is the timing chain... but I had one of those extended Mondial warranties when my car had that problem a few years ago and they covered it fine smile

Good to hear. Only hope they don't take issue with the fact it's got a mix of VW dealer and independent service history. Warranty company were made aware and put the car on policy with this knowledge so I'm hoping it's fine....

Update. Diagnosed as faulty chain tensioner. Engine now being stripped down and will be covered under the Mondial warranty...which expires shortly.

On the 1.4TSi it might be worth renewing it.

Mondial are known to be OK with indie servicing on the BMWs they cover, by the way.
