mrc inspection on my c6 s6 grim reading or am I being a wimp
Discussion
so dropped it off and had good chat with doug on saturday and got some grim reading from ben today.. need to get your collective thoughts
its an 07 s6 avant with about 65k miles and full audi history albeit on the avs regime!
- shes down on power showing 360 on the dyno!!
- oil leak from around the water pump driveshaft area
- rear light cluster borked and so is the one i got from ebay!
- borked rear tailgate switch
- rear lower wishbone bushes are corroded and are weeping fluid
- front panel gaps are off
i know its had new rad and cooler pipes done at audi a couple of years back and im sure the wings have never been off nor resprayed so not too concerned about the panel gaps. i reckon its a bodge on putting the bumper back on the the headlights based on chat with doug are often poorly aligned
i expect its carbon build up so again not fussed at this time on the power loss
the borked lower wbone bushes are a bit odd but simple fix
the tailgate and inop rear light are not scary so ill take the hit for a new light cluster because it needs to pass its mot
i only got the car a few weeks back and whilst i expected to spend some coin on consumables etc, the oil leak has kind of dampened my spirits
i couldnt reach ben today but will buzz him tomorrow. in the meantime, what are your collective thoughts people???

Clearly MRC know what they are talking about but my comments are.
- Dyno results; id take with a massive pinch of salt. If the power feels good and she holds up against similar performing vehicles then who cares.
- I believe the oil pump is located in that area so it could be as simple and the pump gasket.
- Being an 07 are they LED? I picked up a pattern pair of non-LED clusters from ECP and they really are pretty good but they also offer LED versions.
- Rear wishbone bushes; where would the fluid come from? Arent they solid rubber/polyurethane?
- Removing the bumper to put my RS6 grille on only took me & my brother half hour so it shouldn't take long to adjust.

Cheers for that
Had a good old wag of the chin with Ben so my mind at rest
The oil weep could be related to a failed water pump dshaft seal so cheapo part mucho labour. I was surprised to hear that it's not uncommon for these big lumps to be a bit weepy though.
I'll get a Valeo led cluster for almost half the price of genuine Audi one. I'm normally a stickler for genuine parts but will use the oem one for now
The lower wishbones come with bushes pre installed so new 'bones are 500 each! There's no perceptable knocking so ill ride it out for now
You're right about the dyno results. At most I expect I'll release 30 more through a terraclean etc but im not yet fussed enough
it's gonna take some time to get it up to standard and my first project will be a pad and disc refresh. Got lucky on the bay with some cheap genuine items.
New tyres are on and will get geo done and then work slowly through minor stuff over the coming months but importantly, get some miles on it!

Terraclean doesn't clear the carbon on the VAG FSi engines as the carbon is on the back of the valves which is an area Terraclean doesn't reach.
There's a few threads on RS246 about terraclean vs water clean (which does get to the back of the valves) vs a physical clean and only the physical clean showed decent Dyno improvements and visual ones via a boroscope. At best the terraclean/water clean benefits the engine by being an "Italian" tune-up i.e. rev'd hard, which can clear *some* carbon.
The negative of FSi engine having so much valve overlap is this rapid carboning so even after a full strip and clean within 10k miles it'll start coking back up (even worse if the engines not driven hard).
TFSi engine also suffer it but to a much less degree due to the intake manifold being pressurised often.

If you are having new brakes I would recommend fitting the VW Phateon brake duct kit.
With regards to terraclean. They do have a setup for direct injection whereby the chemicals are sprayed in via the inlet manifold so will come into contact with the inlet valves however there is a major flaw. The chemicals follow the path of least resistance so at best the process will only clean a couple of valves on the V10.

Had a camera put down the manifolds of my 2007 S6 with 70k on it by SW Autos in Kent and their opinion was that the carbon build up wasn't bad at all. The car did have a Terraclean before Xmas though.
Apparently the V10s suffer from carbon build up much less than the V8s in the previous version RS4, which is where all the "horror stories" and photos of carbon build up on FSi engines seem to originate. There was such an RS4 in when mine was there - took them 2 days to clean the intakes up on that one (also a PHer's car, IIRC).
Also, I don't understand why the cleaning products taking the path of least resistance is a flaw - surely the blow by gasses do exactly the same and this is the cause of the carbon build up?
As above, I wouldn't worry overly about your list - these cars are 9 years old now, so will take some maintenance to remain in perfect working order and your list all seems like pretty minor stuff.

Ive seen the results first hand of a terraclean type system (BG products) after 2 or 3 treatments and there were a couple of clean ports and the rest looked untouched. Perhaps if it were done dozens of times it might make a real difference however I'm sceptical it will work with multiple cylinders.

Interesting - was it on a V10 engine and what mileage? While we're on the subject, I'm still unsure as to why there isn't a viable preventative measure - either an inline, baffled catch can, or blanking off breather pipes etc?
Also, on the dyno results - is there an accepted transmissions loss figure for the S6 set up? If not, any at the flywheel figures are surely meaningless?
