2008 Tiguan - 1.4tsi or 2.0tdi?
Discussion
The Mrs wants a Tiguan. Budget dictates it will be an early one.
Now, I want to get the petrol engine - she barely does 10k a year, regular short journeys, and is pretty much guaranteed to fill it with petrol regardless if it's supposed to have it or not.
However
I'm very concerned about running a 1.4TSI, and its potential to empty my wallet at a future date. I seem to recall massive oil consumption issues and problematic timing chains when they first started appearing, and that they were quietly discontinued in favour of a different engine in the cars they were fitted to.
I'm well aware of the diesel issues (balance shaft, DPF, Siemens injectors and DMF) but at least they are known quantities with known fixes. The tSI on the other hand seems to be more of a gamble, and with the complex twin changed engine I can hear my mechanic sucking air through his teeth from here
Does anyone have any knowledge of the 1.4TSI as they have aged and racked up the miles?

I've had both those engines in a 2008 Leon and 2011 Golf. The 1.4 TSI was very problematic with the timing chain failing at 55k miles (was originally only a rattle at startup), then a few months later the turbo failed and required replacing. I only tolerated that as I'd taken out an extended warranty. The 2.0 TDI (CR) was significantly better. I ran it from about 90k - 105k miles and had no problems whatsoever. Better performance and obviously economy too.
The balancer shaft issue only affects the PD engine which was never available in the Tiguan. It got the better CR engine from the start. We took a 2.0 TDI Tiguan from 30K to 85K miles with only minor issues, but that was mostly long journeys, so the DPF would have been cleared out regularly.
