looks to be a good choice for a practical fast car than I can throw my MTB in back of with removing the wheels off it.

aside from the known sludge problems "some" VAG 1.8T's have, anything else?

and what are your opinions of them ?

A mate had one for years before trading it for a Mk2 2.0t vRS last year. My large frame 160mm travel MTB would only go in with the front wheel off but his medium frame 150mm travel Orange 5 squeezed in ok. It was pretty reliable as far as I'm aware and I think the mileage was around 150k when he traded it.

my bike is a medium frame 17" 29er hard tail with 120mm forks

I've read that the Mk1 is a much better built car than the Mk2, any truth in this or is just VAG group cars being bashed?
