This morning I woke to go to the gym, it was pitch black (5:40) so I went down started the car and let it warm up naturally. 10 Minutes later I'm in the car and I see no obvious problems. At around 7:10 after the gym its getting light and I am driving into work when I see a crack in the windscreen. I think long and hard and can't remember being struck by anything or noticing it earlier in the morning (granted it was dark).

On the drive into work I'm puzzled, It didn't go through rapid temperature change, hadn't been hit and I at this point I'm confused by what's happened. I get into work and I get out to inspect. There doesn't appear to be any damage and strangely the crack doesn't seem to run to the end of the windscreen. Puzzled by this I did a little Google search and what do you know, it is an identical crack to the one shown in this thread on a GTD:

My question is, whats the best way of claiming for this? Its clearly a manufacturing fault. Do I go straight to my local dealer? Report it to VW directly? I can't be doing with being stuck in a dealership with people sucking through their teeth for hours on end, I just want it sorted as quickly and as efficiently as possible.

The (linked) thread appears to be a good place to get advice from, although each case must be assessed individually IMO.

Just for closure, I inspected the crack thoroughly afterwards and it turns out that there was a small chip in the screen frown

My insurance covered it, Autoglass replaced it Saturday (and an excellent job they did too thumbup)

There usually is an impact.

Overall, a good ending. Did they replace with an OE windscreen?

It was low light when I inspected and posted and nothing was really visible, weirdly, the crack was identical to the one in the post above so I suspect there is some kind of weakness there. I have had loads of chips and cracks but none as clean and as weirdly shaped as that one and the chip really was tiny.

It was not an OEM screen, but all in all I was delighted with the service. Axa Insurance / Autoglass smile
