I haven't really owned any fast cars. I currently drive an E36 328 and had an Integra Type-R before that, both ok performance wise but not fast.

I was just wondering how an B6/7 S4 cab would compare against these two in terms of performance in general driving conditions. I'm usually left wanting for more from my BM but it has only got 192hp(ish)? Am I right in saying the auto S4 has a 0-60 time of over 6 secs...about the same as my Integra?

And how is the S4 up against the BMW 645/650 of the same vintage?

Just wondering really.

You'd notice a massive improvement with regards torque, especially with the Teg.

The thing with the B6 or B7 S4 is the way the speed builds. It's no slouch, but because the power never really eases off, you can soon be up to a ton, especially when overtaking at 50mph. Yes, you can shift to 3rd and sail past, likewise leave it in 6th (down to 30 mph) and it will pull happily from low revs. Well, the manual would.

Exciting? Not in the way a Type R is, no, but a great car none the less. Does many things well as opposed to superb.

Not sure if I'd prefer a manual or auto though I think I've read a few bad things about both??

I do really fancy a V8 cab as my next car, that has a turn of speed. It would occasionally have the job of baby carrier so a 2 seater is a no go, but as we'd have a 5 door hatch in the household I'm hoping I don't have to go full family car just yet (Jag S-Type R is at the top of my list if I do).

I am a fan of the S4 and 650 but one advantage the Audi has is that I can get it in my garage, I think the BM is too big? The Merc CLK55/500 is another option but these seem very rare. E46 M3 too but of course no V8.

Would you say the S4 has a hint of sportiness in it though, to separate it from the lower versions, or is it closer to the TDI's than RS4?!

On Christ, yes. Apologies, I wasn't slating it, I had mine for 7 years and loved it.
It's a little front heavy with that weight over the nose, but it never really bothered me.

Great levels of grip, sure footed handling and bloody quick too. A nice interior and pretty well screwed together.
You can certainly have fun in it if you want to.

Automatic is geared higher so less revs at 85 mph equals better fuel consumption, maybe 25average, mine was always 20 to 22 mpg being a manual.

I cant think of a better specced, more reliable V8 which is "sportier" for the money, and good in all weathers.

Sounds good man. I've been reading old threads on here, with people asking pretty much the same question. Seems it's rated quite highly. Might come down to what pops up for sale the first that I like the look of; S4, CLK55 or 650 (if I choose to go V8 cab route).

I have a b7 s4 manual avant and if has proven to be a good all-rounder with a v8, 4wd and practicality, what is there not to like.

Lack of rear leg room seems to the only negative for me.

It is quite fuel hungry, bit heavy in the nose so understeer is the natural tendancy.

I put an RS4 rear ARB on mine which improved things.
I would assume they'll fit the cab too.
