Seen an S8 to buy - road tested, all good except for wet carpet drivers side, strong wet smell, misted up quickly without blower on. How easy is this to sort? Done 80,000 miles probably needs a timing belt. Also needs brake pads - think they have four each wheel - how easy to change?

Any other known issues, what to look out for. Thanks

Which generation of S8 is it or plate year if you don't know the type?

On the D2 (early V8) and the D3 (V10) the pollen filter scuttle blocked very easily (usually leaves etc) and the water got past the pollen filter seal. If it's the D3 then there is the cabin ECU (CCM) in the front passenger footwell which, if wet, can cause all kinds of issues and it corrodes!

Timing Belt - D2 has a belt which should be changed every 40k miles but the D3 has a chain which is pretty solid.

Pads - D2 is 4 pads, not too much hassle but expensive for 8 pads. D3 is much cheaper and even easier to change.

The drain holes for the scuttle aren't too hard to reach from the wheel arch. Turn the wheel on the side you want to unblock out slightly so you can get to the back rear top of the arch.

With a narrow necked screwdriver in hand, look for a short piece of black plastic tubing hanging down. Slide the screwdriver into that and poke around dislodging any gunk. Repeat on the other side. The scuttle on my 02 S8 was filling up and causing problems with the wiper electrics. When I drained it this way a surprising amount of water came out.

Gearbox should be smooth in all gears, listen and feel for clunks. Audi said it was sealed for life - ignore that, they do fail. Budget for a gearbox oil and filter change - it's not too expensive.

You're very brave!

S8 and water ingress!

Even if you fix the source of the water getting in. Just think how may control units are in one of these and how much they dislike getting wet!

I know of a nice spec D3 that had somewhere along the line (with a previous owner!) been flooded. Owner had put it off for while, but eventually it stopped starting! After that was sorted then the Radio / Nav played up and so it continued! The costs for repairing it were astonishing! And it wasn't just a one off hit. It would work for a while then something else would die. Then once that was fixed. Eventually something else would succumb to water or consequential damage.

If it is a D2 you have two likely options for water in the front seat area, either scuttle drains or air con drains. The aircon drains are easily cleared from inside the car. The scuttle drains, especially the center drain, takes some perseverance to clear, as access is tricky, and you are working by touch. The side scuttle drains are accessible from underneath and is a 20 second job.
