VW T4/T5 Question

Apologies for slight odd question but....
I'm building an aluminium lid for my camping trailer and would like to add roof-style rails to allow standard roof bars to fit to carry the normal roof box/bike rack etc loads. There are so many T4/T5 accessories such as roof rails that its extremely tempting to use a set of those.
The trailer lid will be flat and about 1.5 long so I'd be grateful if anyone could answer ....
Is the T4 or T5 roof mounting for rails completely flat front to rear ?
What is the overall length (very edge of mountings) of typical SWB rails ?
Many of the cheaper options with separate feet actually look like they could be very easily shortened simply by cutting the rail element to length - any experience or exact types that people have installed that could be cut to length also much appreciated .
