Has anyone else had issues with the rear discs on the octavia vrs or golf r? I had to replace the rear discs on my vrs at 19,000 miles as they were so badly grooved. My golf r estate has 4,000 miles on it and the rear discs again are very badly grooved. Is this normal ? and if not whats causing it?

Scored would probably be a better description

I can relate to that with my 64 plate Golf R. Done 9k miles in 12 months but they've been like it for ages - doesn't matter how aggressively I use them they still look a mess whereas the fronts are pristine. My guess is there is very little rear brake bias.

VW healthcheck identified them as 'red' during my first service. When I said it was ridiculous as they'd been like it since about 3k miles they said it was a mistake and should've been highlighted as 'Amber' as the pads were only 10% worn and it was merely cosmetic. I wonder if I will get 'stung' by VW at the end of the lease as I certainty won't be replacing them and short of getting them skimmed I can't see their appearance improving. I'm used to getting 60k+ miles out of discs so to be told I need to replace them at just over 10k miles is ridiculous.

My 2012 Octavia vRS had badly scored rear discs when I bought it used in 2013 at 9-1/2K miles. Three years later and now on 37K miles and the rear discs look just the same with plenty of 'meat' left on the pads. Has passed two MOTs with no advisory. A chat with the MOT tester bought the comment, "Just leave the discs until the pads need changing and then also change the discs".

At both services the dealer said new rear discs/pads were required at a cost of close to £240. A local VAG specialist quoted £140!

Thanks for the reply Glosphil - sounds very familiar. When I queried it a technician came and spoke to me and said pads are barely worn so don't bother to replace the discs until the pads are worn out - they quoted me £249 but your indi price sounds very good. Mines a daily driver, doesn't exactly pootle around and I only ever wash the wheels immediately before driving it so I don't think there is anything I could do differently to prevent the scoring appearing again in just a couple of thousand miles on a new set. The technician also said that with electronic parking brakes you can't just drive around with the handbrake lightly applied to clean them up but I'm not even sure that would work tbh as surely they'd need to be applied quite vigorously for that to happen and even hard braking from high speed doesn't seem to improve their appearance. I've had a couple of cars with electronic parking braking and rear disc scoring wasn't an issue on them, although they did seem to consume rear pads quicker than fronts which is somewhat unusual but I think it's down to the pad contact area being smaller because of the mechanism rather than anything else.

Not quite the same but my rear disks and pads were replaced under 'goodwill' by my dealer at 7k miles as they were squealing really badly at low speeds.

It took quite a lot of persuading and one of their technicians driving the car forwards and backwards round their car park until the car stopped with a grinding noise coming from the rear.

They never did tell me what was actually wrong with it.

Eta, should point out my car is a GTI with the performance pack.

I had this scoring problem on my vRS. The rears were badly scored and quite rusty towards the very edge of the outside of the disc. I got them replaced last year (~38K miles) at the same time as a pad change. The replacement ones have been fine. The front discs are still the original however the dealer did warn that the front discs are also quite badly scored too although on the inside as opposed to the outside. I was a bit miffed at having to replace the rears at such a relatively low mileage but to be fair I haven't had to spend much else on the car other than routine servicing so can't really complain.

Saw lots with scored rear disks at a dealers, had them change the disks and pads on the car I bought - only 11k miles!

After market disks may be a better choice.

Don't know about VAG cars, but all the modern Volvos we ran had a "healthy" appetite for rear pads/discs due to the way the ESP system works them, particularly when pushing on.
