Thinking of getting an Audi S4 Avant but after recently having a go in an A5 3 litre diesel, I'm wondering if I should consider a diesel version?

I never thought I'd ever consider a diesel car, Wife's had s few but I've always been very much a petrol man. Now I've not yet driven either an S4 or a diesel A4 to compare and although the S4 puts out more HP the diesel isn't too far behind and it certainly has the torque, meaning for day to day driving there might not be that much in it and the difference in fuel consumption would be welcome.

I'll be trying both in the near future and maybe that will convince me but would appreciate any advice, opinions, recommendations or maybe just someone to talk me out (or not) of buying a diesel... smile

The biggest difference is cost. The technology to make a diesel go fast, is VERY expensive when it go's wrong, if you buy one make sure you have a good warranty.

The only reason I have a turbo diesel (A6 1.9Tdi) is for economy. To go fast, I have the S4, to go very fast I have the bike.

Interesting, I suppose that explains the diesel costing more or less like the S4? but I hadn't considered the diesel might, potentially, be more troublesome.

The S4's looking more likely, we've already got an economical diesel that I can use (soon to be replaced with one even more economical) and I don't do huge mileages so am not overly worried about fuel consumption as long as it's not under 20 mpg, my A3 (3.2) only does around 25mpg.

Actually no, the 3.0 diesel is one of the most reliable engines Audi have ever produced. They give very little aggro to speak of.

S4 motor largely the same; a very strong unit.

The diesel is incredibly effective at what it does but never really an exciting car; the S4 does a better job of fulfilling the tasks of daily driver and plaything. It is the better "jack of all trades" car and a lot of people will argue that there is no car available at any price that does this better.

The 3.0 V6 Audi TDI is very reliable.

Also if you were interested in tuning it, I have a friend who has one at 445bhp with nothing more than turbo and fuel pump upgrades.

Thanks for the info. What is the real-world fuel consumption of both? I've read the figures but I don't trust manufacturer's claims. Also what is the difference between the 218 and 272hp diesel? (besides 54hp).

I was impressed with the straight-line pull of the V6 diesel in the A5 (not sure which version of 3.0 tdi?) but the petrol is probably more up my street, still 445hp from the diesel? scratchchin

Already got the bikes so don't need can't afford the RS4. thumbup

Both are good but the earlier (lower power engine) has smaller turbo and what not. Struggles a tad more with the heavy car.
I'd go for a later model engine.

Great thread; I'll bet that's a riot in a 'regular' looking A4 smile

One of the few cars that makes me giggle from acceleration alone.
Also in complete silence with stock cat back exhaust section. Very odd sensation.
