Hi all,

Just ordered my new van, and it will require Adblue adding at various intervals.

Does anyone else run a car/van that needs it, and if so, where is the best place to get it?

Ive looked around the web but the nearest filling station for it is around 20 miles away.

I know it can be purchased from VW with it coming in their special containers but it seems very expensive from them!

Thanks!

Try this

http://www.findadblue.com/

I just used a service station, where the trucks fill up. Only issue is that the nozzle was too big and so i had to hold it in place and drip it in carefully. A funnel would have been useful.

You can buy it in tubs (5litres I think) buy one and keep it in ya van as emergency but to be honest you wont use much. My DAF has a 90 litre adblue tank and 400l diesel tank for every tank of adblue I use I can get about 4-5 tanks of diesel out of it.

Fill it up at the garage when you fill up with fuel. Using it sounds like a ball ache to start with but its not that bad.

This thread prompted me to check the AdBlue status on my Passat:

Does anyone know whether VW work in US or Imperial gallons, as that changes the minimum fill from three and a quarter to four and a half litres?

Have approx. 600 miles of journeys over the weekend, so will see what that does to the range and max fill values.

Did the adblue on our VW Sharan a while back.

They sell a small top up bottle with a non drip filler which works really well. They also do a much bigger (and significantly cheaper per litre) bottle designed to work with the workshop pump or whatever they use.

Anyway the single use small bottle is easily modified so you can refill it from the larger bottle. Yes it takes a little while but isn't the end of the world.

I should add in the Sharan the filler is in a panel in the boot so consequence of a spill is fairly significant, in a van I'd probably risk a funnel and a few rags! Think the tank took about 7-8 litres and seems to last quite a while.

Thanks everyone.

I have found out that the Adblue filler is next to the fuel filler behind the flap.

With that in mind, i may just go with the VW stuff, as hopefully, it shouldn't need topping up much between services apparently!

I notice that the cars have a range displayed on the dash, but how do you know how much to put in?

That was the gist of my post and screen-shot above; looks like you have to put a minimum in to allow an accurate re-calculation of range.

(and I have spotted a typo in my above post; the US v Imperial gallon query makes a variance between three and three-quarters to four and a half litres for a minimum fill)

My Passat also has the AdBlue filler on the outside by the diesel filler - much better design.

Ask your dealer: They may supply adblue free of charge during the warranty period.

That would be great, however, I did neglect to mention that I have bought a Caddy!

I will ask though as you never know.

Thanks smile

Ok, took delivery of the van a couple of weeks ago and it gives me a range of 5000 miles when full.

Is everyone else's the same or do I have a small tank?

Bit of a pain in the ass really, considering it's a commercial vehicle!

Mrs SB's disco sport has a 13L adblue tank, and that seems to be good for about 8K miles. Looks like the caddy only has a 10L tank, but that's good for 11K miles - However, I suspect that the emissions scandal has forced them to increase adblue use so reduce the range!

My A5 had a 20l tank. I topped up the adblue tank after 2000 miles from new and put 9l in it. I'm hoping its come from the factory without a full tank or else this will cost a lot! I'm going to leave it for a few thousand miles and brim it again to see how much for definite it uses. According to the manual it should be about a litre per 1000 miles.

...but then the fooking car is supposed to do 60mpg and I'm lucky to get low 40s!

Thanks for the link and info.

Mine is the 150bhp so I guess the ad blue usage would be more compared to the 102bhp.

Perhaps I'll rtfm when I get home .

In May my Passat started nagging that I was down to 1500 miles range, so I purchased three of the 1.89 litre VW bottles with the funky valves (required three to ensure I met the minimum fill requirement) at a total cost of £20.20 from my local VW LCV place.

A suggestion on t'internet is to cut the base out of a VW spec bottle and use it as a funnel for AdBlue purchased in bulk.

I was going to purchase the 10 litre AdBlue pack from Halfords but by chance I stopped at a local-ish forecourt that were selling the same 10 litre pack as Halfords for £10.55 and so I bought one there.

Currently at 2, 500 mile range, so will fill up later this month.

VW has instructed its dealers to fill it for you while you wait for a fixed charge of £1.50 per litre after too many reports of its ahole dealers charging people £70 for a fill.

If that's inconvenient you can buy from VAG's TPS (Trade Parts Centre) in 5, 10 & 20L containers for about £1 per litre and a filler tube for about £7.

Missus has a Tiguan and the range with its 12L tank is about 4000 miles. She doesn't do many miles and I just drop 5L in now and again.

My Touareg has a 20ltr tank, warning came on at around 10k miles. Main dealer filled it whilst I waited at the princely sum of £1.50 a ltr, it needed 17.5ltrs. Deemed it wasn't worth getting my hands dirty for twenty odd quid. On the Touareg the fill point is under the spare wheel.

The big 10lt Adblue containers you can buy at most service stations come with a spout attached to the back.
