WHAT ABOUT A S6
Discussion
Plain and boring looking bar the quad exhaust (would have been a great Q-Car but for those) but a great engine with amazing performance for the money! As a bonus, for less than £8k you can be running 730hp too (RS6 turbo conversion).
Handling is better than the V10 S6 and feels a bit more Rear biased but there's still "no feel" through the steering wheel even though it corners much more quickly than you'd expect.
I've only had a weekend test of one (got a C6 RS6) so my thoughts just a quick snap-shot.

They're rare. Much rarer than RS6's. And they're also heavily discounted when new (£12-13K off list from brokers, for example) so bear this in mind if looking at 'nearly new' cars.
Considered one, but didn't drive one as the narrow lanes near home aren't conducive to big barges. I spend enough times reversing the S4 into passing places as it is.

I'm currently looking at changing our S3 for an S6 Avant. The one thing I would say, is if you were looking at 1yr old cars, you might want to look at getting a new one. The dealers were offering almost £15k off list. In terms of driving, compared to the S3, and I know this is stating the obvious, but given its size, it didn't feel that pointy and fast.
I was considering one along BMW M5 initially and after test driving both there is absolutely no contest there. audi felt very clinical and underwhelming and just boring. M5 on the other hand felt alive and just so much power....
After a while I added c63 AMG (last generation) into the mix and its probably what I will go for. Feels like simplest car of the 3, most engaging to drive and probably cheapest as well.

C7's are wide. I had a C7 avant followed by a B8.5 S4 replaced now with a C6 avant. The C7 feels a LOT wider than the C6 and was a real b*gger in multi story car parks. I have always liked the idea of an S6 for exactly the reasons you suggest though. The reason I now have the C6 is that it's got the S4 engine (running around 430bhp now) but looks like a 2.0 diesel.
test drove an S6 , bought a biturbo diesel. those cars are very similar in character , so i went for the diesel as it was cheaper to run.
I now have an RS6, its a totally different car. its the same engine, but everything about the car is just more aggressive, not in a bad way, but all three cars that i drove, owned have air suspension, the sport setting in the S6is the same a s the sort setting in the biturbo and that is like the comfort setting in the RS6. the way the torque converter picks up and locks up is sharper and the Sport setting just makes the lower cars tighten a little, it changes the whole character of the RS6.
I prefere the RS6, but i can equally see why people could prefer the S6.
