Turbo problems :-(
Discussion
Have a 51k miles 2007 Audi A3 2.0Tdi S-line Quattro. Lovely condition, but when accelerating hard, black smelly smoke - which I am told means a tired turbo. Car was remapped to 220bhp, when 'sommething' was removed that was faulty (?)....and this extra bhp may have tired the Turbo.
Thoughts and advise appreciated.
Would like to keep the car long term, as fits needs perfectly.
Cost of Turbo replacement ?
Should Turbo also be 'bigger' to handle the bhp ?
What is my best route moving forward ?
Used daily as the main car, and no other faults...if I had not been followed running into town, I would have been blissfully ignorant !
Thanks. BA

the problem with this sort of thing it is never simple and you need to fault find.
A good idea would be to try and fit a boost pipe to the turbo so you can see if it is boosting.(with gauge
)
You need to check the vac system as any leak in the pipes could cause the black smoke, like an intercooler pipe loose or split pipe somewhere.
Diesel turbos are generally pretty strong usually a weakness in the system somewhere.
Have you have the code read via Vag com.

Black smoke on that diesel is likely normal, blue smoke you need to worry and 'siren' noise is sign of turbo issue but my pd150 leon fr has black smoke and it's fine
Older model diesels this occurs and the DPF probably cut's it right back, removal will mean it occurs on hard acceleration and if the map was a give me as much power as possible then it is likely
If it is an older PD engine then this is probably nothing to be worried about as it is old dirty tech compared to the newer common rail units

220bhp is not easily achievable on these engines.
The turbos are pretty strong on these, not often they fail.
It could be a boost leak.... black smoke is too much fuel, or not enough air, or a combination of both.
Go to a local reputable tuner after you have done some basic diagnostic work.
Check the lower intercooler pipework for leaks... usually the nearside at the bottom..
