Golf Glowplug issue..

Ladies and gentlemen,
Posting on behalf of a friend who has a 61 plate 1.6 Golf diesel with around 51,000 miles and full main dealer history.
A recent bout of rough running and starting problems led to a diagnosis of three faulty glowplugs. All four have now been replaced, and the problem has been resolved.
The big issue is the price. The bill came to £2100, which seemed to my pal to be excessive. As the car was needed for the usual daily duties, he had little choice but to pay up, but with the assurance from the dealer that they would approach VW for a good will contribution.
Needless to say, VW refused any assistance, which I guess is their prerogative.
I'd be interested to hear from any owners in a similar situation, or comment from the VW community.
