Have a 2007 Audi A6 auto and don't really ever use the electromagnetic handbrake unless on a hill.

A few weeks ago I had an "ABS fault please see handbook" warning come up but turned ignition off and on again and it went. Had occasion to need to leave the car for a week and decided to leave the handbrake on for some reason, came back to car after a week and started it but handbrake failure light cam on plus the ABS and stability control lights. Drove away timidly with apparently no resistance rubbing etc and car seemed fine. stopped a while later and coasted to a halt and there was no resistance etc. Turned ignition off and then turned it back on and all lights went off.

Left handbrake off and drove car again and car was absolutely fine, reached destination and left it in drive with handbrake on and when I came to drive away again all the lights came back one!

Now a little irritated and confused!

Car currently appears to be suffering a number of glitches, most irritating of which it the powered tailgate will erratically sometimes only go up for 18 inches and then decide to stop and close again.

Any thoughts?

Could be battery failure. All sorts starts playing up when the battery is knackered. That would be my number 1 thing to change. After that it would need someone with a fault code reader to reset all faults codes and go from there.

You should always use your handbrake simply to stop any of the components from seizing through lack of use. You have to check your calipers, as they may have developed a crack on the exterior casting allowoing water ingress. I have replaced a couple of these recently about the sqame age as your car. One was a Bentley, same calipers!
