Hi, I've just put a deposit on a 2011 Octavia 1.8 tsi.

I've just done some more research on the engine and see lots of reports of failure on the cam chain tensioner. Is this something to be concerned about or just the internet making things seem worse? Do people change to the updated tensioner as a precaution and if so how much does it cost to do so? Thanks for any help.

I might be wrong but that engine doesn't suffer. It's the older this engines that are belt and chain wehere the tensioner goes.

With the newer tsi engines it's just 1 chain that does the crank to both cams. Still a point worth checking as they do fail.

This is on the MK6 GTI forum so its in relation to the 2.0TSI, not sure if it is the same for the 1.8.

"The latest release of the Tensioner 06K109467K was only released on 01/05/12 so any fitted before this are probably at risk.
Interestingly there is an extra note with a red stop sign in ETKA saying "Spare part must not be used any more please use replacement"

There was a revised tensioner fitted from engines built from 17 May 2010
A second revision of the tensioner from engines built in December 2011.
A third revision of the tensioner as quoted by Mike above from 01 May 2012."

OK thanks, as there are so many different models affected across the VAG range I'm surprised this issue isn't discussed more.

If its a tidy car maybe try to bargain another £400 off and pay to get a new tensioner fitted?

Hi ... my other post was removed as it may have been similar to another i've asked elsewhere.

I will therefore ask specific question here as this is a newer thread and hopefully someone can help.

Is it near certain that the new revised tensioner solves the problem and therefore removes the risk? Or is this engine for 2010 models which is what I am looking at best avoided?
