My wifes car has a Basic MMI navigation system and it is using a 2007 disc.
Where is the best place (read cost effective) to obtain a more up to date disc?

I am not sure I trust ebay at £19.99.

Bear in mind the proper disks are locked to your car for copy protection reasons. So basically anything that does not involve taking your car to Audi for them to install it will be pirated and involve defeating that mechanism.

The current nav version for MMI basic is 5.22.3, so try searching for that for some more information..

Not true for that system. Put new disc in drive = done. It is true that on some cars the eject button on the drive has been disabled, that's an antitheft feature which needs either VCDS or dealer tool to eject the disc. To be fair though, if someone's rummaging in the car boot, they're likely to just steal the entire drive...

However, the £20 eBay specials are not legitimate discs. Don't know of other cheaper legitimate sources, but you might get lucky and find someone selling a genuine but year-old disc?

True for 3G basic as it blocked the disk until the correct FSC code is on the system. I recall this is a feature on all nav disks since 2010ish. Dont know about 2G.

Thanks WinstonWolf.

Is it the MMI 2G Navigation DVD – Europa 2014 file I would be interested in?

It depends on the generation of navigation system - some MMI 'basic' systems were using CDs until quite late (2005?). Assuming it's MMI 2G (simple single layer DVD as per A6 retrofit download) then happy days. The 'proper' basic systems have controls down by the handbrake and no central display screen - just the red display in the instrument cluster. They're CD based and rare as hens teeth, using Blaupunkt media. They stopped supporting new media for those in 2014-15 IIRC.

There's also 3G Basic on later A4 and A5 models which can run off a DVD in the dash or an SD card, which requires activation. It's not difficult to do this yourself.

If you don't know what you have, post the part number details off your current disc and it can be looked up to confirm what generation it is. Or post some pics of what's in your car smile

Thanks all.

I asked my Audi dealer to unlock the Navigation unit so the CD could be ejected. They ejected the disc for me and I re-inserted it over the weekend. Now it wont come out again - groan.

Anyway - to give you an idea of what I have - some pictures.....(when Photobucket finally sort out their blooming unresponsive script!!!).

Think they'll need to unlock it for you again frown

Unless anyone knows better I think that's known a MMI II Low.

Hiya

There's 2 methods to eject the disc - one releases it one time only, the other is to remove the drive transport lock (which should be done at PDI) and enables the eject button - both can be done with VCDS, or by the dealer.

I am 99% sure that the discs used in this type of nav (if it's BNS 5.x) are Blaupunkt Travelpilot E

Dead giveaway that it's CD based is the fact you only get UK and Ireland on the disc - for a DVD setup that'd be the whole of Western Europe! Should be a part number on that case somewhere....

If I'm correct then only genuine discs can be used (check disc and setup info on the car to check) and this place looks to have the right ones:

Just handed my wifes A6 to the main dealer for some service items.
They have kindly loaned me a fantastic Loan car. It has a SD card in the Slots titles Europa maps 2015.
It would be rude for me not to copy this to keep a copy in case they ever loose this - wouldnt it?

Is it really this easy? Obviously this wont work in my car, but is this how hte ebayer's do it?

Depending on the model of car, that's most likely MMI 3G Basic. All the later types of nav require an activation process to be run on each vehicle so a copy of the SD card contents alone is about as useful as a chocolate teapot (even more so as it's a year out of date) and generally you can download what you need from all sorts of places
