Hi guys as per the title. My sons 2002 1.6 s petrol golf was running fine until very recently. If you start it from cold and go for a drive, it runs perfect until you are 5 mins in, or taking the same route, within 1/2 mile of the same distance, the car just dies.

All sudden loss of power. When i pull over and turn the ignition off and the restart, she fires up immediately. So we head for home, but this will occur again ,within the next few minutes or before we arrive home.

Apart from this car drives really well, pulls strongly in all gears, no misfiring or rough running. There are no engine management lights showing any faults and this has me really baffled.

Fuel pump and filter were changed about 3 months ago, temp sensor was changed about a month ago but this was showing a fault light, and the AA were called out, who did diagnostics showing the temp sensor as faulty.

Cleaned the throttle body, new air filter, plugs checked and cleaned, i am now running out of ideas.

Possible crankshaft sensor fault??????? Any help or pointers appreciated.

Thanks

Tom.

Many years ago my Triumph Acclaim (I know) did this. Cut out at same spot every day. Turned out to be a blocked fuel filter.

HELP......................................... AA man spent the best part of 90 mins testing everything on the car.
He could not find any faults.
Car was on the drive and he let it get up to temp, with the fans kicking in but, no matter how hard he tried it just kept ticking over. He eventually gave up.
I took the car out for a test run, along the same route as usual, and the car lost all power and i had to pull over. Turn the ignition off and then on and she starts first time.

Could this be a fueling problem as the car cuts out at almost the exact same spot each time. That is 5 times out of 6 at the exact same place or at least within 30mtrs. When i turn the ignition off and then on again , am i repriming the fuel pump.
Could the fuel relay be overheating and sticking in some way.
Getting desperate now as this was my sons car, IT WAS SOLD for the asking price, but as since developed this fault.
I will not sell the car until this is sorted, or if we dont fix it, then its on ebay with the fault highlighted, but unfortunately for my son,for a lot less cash.
It was a really good car, with 81,000 genuine miles and a really strong engine. It seems a shame to just sell it as a non runner, or at least with known faults.

When you say it loses all power does it actually cut out, will it tick over but not rev or does it stay running and will rev but have no power ?

You are driving along normally and then you lose everything. No prior warning whatsoever, engine just completely shuts down. Its as if i had turned the key in the ignition to off, only the battery light shows on the dash.

Press the accelerator and nothing car just rolls to a stop .I have tried to bump start it straight after it dies as the car is still rolling, but it won't bump start. When i eventually roll to a stop all that shows is the battery light. I

have to turn the ignition off and then back on and the car starts straight away.

If i leave home and go for a drive it will cut out within the first 3 miles. Once restarted it will cut out again within 3 miles.

Things i have noted are.....

The car gets up to its normal temp. Once it dies the rev counter and speedo still show, but the AA man said these get there info from the gearbox side, so if you are in gear and still rolling they will indicate.

There must be some link in that the car will die at almost the exact same spot each time you drive it.

As has already been mentioned, post the issue on http://uk-mkivs.net/

Much more specific forum to the model of car, they may have had the issue brought up before, well worth a search on there.

Worn out ignition switch I reckon. They wear out over time anyway, but wear is accelerated when people have a million keys on their keyring.

The answer was within my post above. .............Could this be a fueling problem....................Yes it was.

A fuel pump only fitted 3 months ago was the culprit. With the tank half full or more, gravity and a weak pressure pump was enough to fuel the car. Drop below a quarter of a tank and now its just the pump that must pull fuel up and deliver it, and this pump was not doing it.
Exchanged with the supplier for a new one......Car is as good as new woohoo
