I'm trying to word this a bit better, the first post was removed buy the mods, I was only trying to help people. edits in CAPS for clarity.

20years a motor trade professional and think I'm aware of all the scams out there and pretty streetwise...... not so.

I became the owner of a 2007 A4 with a failed gearbox, very cheap, Great.

Striped the box to repair only to find beyond repair. Great.

Struggled to get hold of good second hand gearbox from all the usual suppliers, breakers eBay sellers etc.

Then I found this. WOW great, right??

AN EBAY ADD FOR AUDI ENGINES AND GEARBOX'S

The add will probably be taken down soon so here is how it reads.

SOMETHING ABOUT A BREAKERS YARD SELLING CAR PARTS
LOTS IN STOCK PLEASE RING
A PHONE NUMBER UK LAND LINE

So phoned them, very polite professional guy on the phone, took my car reg, and knew the correct gearbox code for the car, and has one in stock, from a crashed lowish mileage car, WOW Great. Its almost half the price of the only other one I could find, WOW Great.

I need it ASAP so to ship it today he needs to see the money in the bank ASAP. So emails me a very professional invoice with company name and address and bank details. I internet transfer the money into the account, they call me back later to confirm I have done this and ship the gearbox.

But it never comes.............

Phone number no longer is answered, and when I Google the address on the invoice, it's a completely different (totally legit breakers yard business) who have never heard of me, and are very distressed their business address is being misused like this.

So spoke to the bank, I won't be getting my money back. They can't tell me who owns the account I paid into.

Spoke to police, they made me fill in an online form, that probably never get looked at by anyone, but I do get a Crime Reference Number, even with this bank say, no money for you, you were stupid, should have paid with a card then could be recovered.

Contacted eBay, they don't care, and even if they did policy stops them telling me what they do about it, but clearly it isn't taking down the adds to help others.

So I'm down £500 and still need a second hand gearbox. GGGGRRRRRR

please all keep an eye out for these adds and dont buy anthing from them.

THEY HAVE LOTS OF VERY SIMILAR LOOKING ADDS, BUT FROM DIFFERENT EBAY USERS

That is all.

TT, you have my sympathies. If there's anything I can't stand it's a con merchant like this. We should bring back the death penalty for them!!

But what really makes me utterly spit flame is the attitude of E Bay. I have had it out with them on several occasions over similar scams and they are utterly useless. What we need is the government to introduce much stricter regulation of online sites to oblige them to tighten up their security checks on buyers and sellers. Mind you, the state of governemnet right now would mean that the blind would be leading the blind!!

Hope you find a 'box soon.

Not much sympathy from me to be honest.

Ebay make a big deal about buyer protection.
If you use PayPal.
You chose to ignore that or didn't think in your rush to get an item at what seemed like a good deal.

Who these days does not have a PayPal account? Except for maybe your 85 year old Grandma. Every business should and can easily have one.

If I cannot buy with PayPal I get very suspicious, I always pay with Goods and Services so you are protected.
If the seller refuses but I still want the Item I would be using a Credit Card so there's 100% chance I can have my money back.

It's pretty simple really, a bank transfer is about as secure as throwing the money out of your bedroom window.

Yes I was silly, I wasn't after sympathy, just an advisory note for all not to be as silly as me.

The search for the box was a two week thing with nothing available under £1000, so when one came up at circa £500 I jumped at it, had a day in the workshop booked to fit it and needed it delivered before then.

All these factors had me rush the purchase decision and not really think about it.

That all said, Why do eBay allow people to advertise with an office contact number, so you cant possibly buy though eBay. with paypay etc.

They should sort these adds out, as much as I shouldn't have been so keen to part with my money.

Sorry to hear of this ball ache situation.

Can a link to the ad be provided, so we can see who we are dealing with here. I need to buy a OEM Symphony II 6-cd headunit and don't want to get burned by a scam artist1

I feel for you. And I think I think it's easy to be convinced by something on ebay.

I bought some winter wheels and tyres as they looked mint in the pictures and were described as Dunlop winter tread.

When I turned up, the wheels were badly marked, the tyres were remoulds, and the fifth wheel didn't have a winter tyre on and it was flat.

I actually felt physically sick.

I'd already paid as the photos looked great, and I didn't know enough about ebay to reject them.

So I reluctantly took them home, and the wife had a massive go at me for wasting money.

Luckily (in my case) the seller had clicked returns accepted, so I then managed to get my money back.

It did cost me about £120 in fuel to go and pick them up and then return them however.

But I did learn a valuable lesson that day.

ummm... because sometimes it's easier to phone up and ask than do back and forth e-mails.
there is every chance to purchase through Ebay you can make a new advert in 20 seconds likewise even if you pay through PayPal randomly using Goods and Services you are covered by Paypal Buyer Protection.

The problem here is you were in a rush and unfortunately you fell victim to being ripped off.
