There's an x-reg audi for sale locally, it's badged as an RS4 but I didn't think they came in a saloon version.
I've had a look, I know the the old guy who is selling it, he used to have a bit of money and bought it second hand about 15 years ago without knowing much about it and has simply run it till it's old and scruffy looking.
I've had a look and it has a longditudinal v6 with twin turbos, quattro and bigger arches than standard. I don't know enough about them to say exactly what it is but it it looks like something a bit special even though it's getting a bit rusty round the arches etc.
He's just put it through an MOT but the garage told him it'll need a fair bit of work before too long so he's looking for £375 ono just to get rid of it, bargain of the century if it is genuine but not very likely.
Anyone have any idea of what it might be?

Sounds like an S4 that has been modified to me. Get the V5 and check the VIN number.

RS B5 was avant only. Seen a few with RS arches etc fitted - depends on the quality of what has been done. Tread carefully!

no, most likely a s4 with a wide body kit.

the rs2 actually had a few saloon built.

Could be a money pit of biblical proportions, as said above the b5 rs4 was avant only and very limited numbers, I believe 200 in the uk so getting body parts if it has genuine rs arches is going to be eye watering expensive.

If you have turbo problems, they are matched pair at around £3k, personally I would look at it from a distance as interesting and then run a mile.

That's what I was thinking, it's running well (albeit on cheap chinese tyres) and a full years MOT. Must be worth it even if it's just for a few months' fun.

I would buy it I am looking for a project but it would cost you about 1k+ to replace turbo with recon and sort cambelt out. the 4wd system is unburstable. Weak points are turbos and pipework (not really that bad thou), engine is generally solid.

or turn it into a track car?

Too late, I've bought it. I'll start a thread about it once I've worked out how tell my wife I've bought another car yikes and got it home. Looks like (as others have said) that it's an S4 with a few modifications, looking forward to investigating.

I had one from new back in the day, there was a problem with the exhaust manifold that meant engine out to fit a new one. I seem to remember being told it was a weak point and from memory that was probably around 1998/9.

B5 S/RS was never anything other than manual. B6 S4 with V8 could be had as an auto, which suited the soft top quite well. B7 RS was manual only, B8 was available with manual/s-tronic flappy paddles originally, but later ones are s-tronic only

Ive never seen an auto s4 b5 in the uk. Parkers only list the manual as well. I don't think it was sold in the uk as an auto.
