Audi TT 3.2 (2003). Rattle affecting power ?
Discussion
Anyone any clue what this might be:
The TT has developed a rattle that occurs with forward motion of the car, like when pulling away. It occurs at slower speeds and is marginally worse when running over rough road or going up a hill, but only under acceleration. When i can hear the rattle the power to the wheels is slightly reduced and i can feel the power come back to the wheels when the rattle stops. The rattle lasts about half a second when i hear it and never longer. The revs don't change but it interrupts acceleration slightly - like if you slightly touched the brakes then let go. It sounds like it is coming from under the footwell or the back of the engine, but its hard to tell. Gears are operating fine in all modes and i have no dash warnings coming up.
Any ideas ?
Thanks.

Timing chain/tensioner??
My A3 3.2 had this fail although mine just suddenly lost power and stayed like that, as if it was only running on 3 or 4 cylinders.
Apparently it's quite a common fault (well maybe not exactly common but not unheard of), bad news is that it's an engine out job, not too many parts but 15-16hrs labour (I was quoted).
Dealer wanted £1,600 to do mine but after some discussion and due to buying new from them and FSH from them they good-willed most of it and did it for £400 including a service - took them a couple of months though for various reasons.

It's certainly the right age for worn chains. VAG sorted it for 2005 onwards 3.2 engines. You can check that before throwing parts at it via diagnostics though, if you know someone with VCDS (formerly known as VAG-COM). Check measuring blocks 208 and 209. The numbers should around 8 or less.
But going by the description, it kind of sounds like pinking to me. There was a VAG software update on the early 3.2s called the '6463 update', which altered the ignition advance to remove a flat spot. Might be worth investigating whether yours was done.
But the first step with any VW/Audi of this age, and newer, is to check it for fault codes before preparing the wallet for a clobbering.
